When I think of Women Who Shine in my community the first couple of people who come to mind is my best friend and her mom! I nominated Jenny B. to the Yahoo Women Who Shine campaign that they are having under the category of “Public Service”. She is an amazing woman who has lived her life through leading by example. I am not sure I have ever seen Jenny without a smile on her face! Her smile “shines” and is contagious as she serves and organizes service to help those with special needs.
I met Jenny when I was a freshman in college when I became friends with her daughter. Not only is she one of the nicest ladies you will meet but she demonstrates it by living a life with poise and purpose. She is the most unselfish person one will ever meet as she lives by giving to others. She not only gives all she can to friends and family, but she participates to do good to complete strangers that she doesn’t even know.
Jenny volunteers on the advisory board of Alpha Sigma Alpha and volunteered on the collegiate and national side of the organization. This sorority is not only a social sorority but it teaches young women to live well rounded lives through taking care of themselves physically and spiritually through service, leadership, and social interactions. Jenny is the Recruitment Advisor and has held several offices on the alumnae level including President and Treasurer. These are all volunteered positions.
For the last six years Jenny began volunteering her time as a chairperson to the YMCA challenger. She has been a part of the board and helping with the startup from when it first started. This organization helps give special needs kids and adults a place to learn teamwork through sports. It teaches them to grow not only physically but through personal growth. While serving on the advisory committee she has helped in the organization of many fundraisers while bringing the community together to help kids! As an advisor she has had to plan each event and organizes and works with vendors, volunteers, and sponsors!
Jenny was also the Chairman of Touched by Cancer Celebrity Golf Tournament for 3 years and is currently VERY active in her community! She belongs to Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, YMCA Mission Board member/event chair for Challenger Program (kids w/special needs), KC Chamber of Commerce, KCRAR realtor assoc., Northwest Alumnae and Networking groups, Alpha Sigma Alpha Alumnae sorority groups. In these groups she has held various leadership position. She displays her leadership by leading through example.
