I learned that Tilda Swinton IS amazing! She plays “The Ancient One” in Doctor Strange! I am blessed to have been invited on the expense paid trip to the Doctor Strange press junket and have the opportunity to do an exclusive interview with the cast in Doctor Strange!
I am so excited and thrilled that I had to opportunity to interview Tilda Swinton. I am humbled by these opportunities that all of you reading my blog have opened for me!
Tilda is an energetic and fun actress to interview.
I really loved the part she played in the movie and getting to meet her in person was awesome. She was so charismatic and sweet. As we were out in the hall a couple of times she was waving to us! “Hi mommy bloggers!”’
She was super sweet and it was really amazing to be able to interview her! What impressed me the most was just how talented and how great she did as her role as the Ancient One!
Our interview consisted of her excited to buy her figurines as Christmas Presents, how her costume felt like wearing pajamas every day, and of course what it was like to play the role of “The Ancient One”! Check out our interview highlights below!
Tilda Swinton Doctor Strange Interview!
So what was it like getting into costume for the Ancient One?
Tilda: Oh it’s such a great costume! It’s like, very— like, pajamas.
Did you have any struggles with this particular role?
Tilda: The only real struggle was casting spells – learning all these amazing things with fingers, and then remembering what to say at the same time. And then they would say, ‘So you have to put your hands there, not there because the light is going to go swwwww swwwwww so that kind of masks… but it was all good.
How did you feel about being cast in a role that’s traditionally an Asian man?
Tilda: … I was asked to play an ancient Celtic person. If I’d been asked to play an Asian man I would’ve— I would’ve shown them Benedict Wong….They (Kevin and Scott) wanted to shake up the stereotype. They felt that there were couple of kind of gnarly, eh… racial stereotypes around the two big Asian characters in the film, one was Benedict’s—Benedict Wong’s character; he was a sort of servant. And the other was the Ancient One, who was a kind of old, wise Fu Manchu character. (The reasoning will be explained more in a future post…so be sure to come back and read Marvel fans!)
How did you feel about being bald in the movie?
Tilda: Well it was my decision – it was my suggestion and we had this great several months of playing with options, all sorts of weird wig ideas, all sorts of long lobes and we went ‘round the houses with it but eventually, it felt like less was more and I loved it. I thought it looked really, really ancient, but also kind of modern and rad and… yeah and it was a… it was a nice feeling, as well.
What was the dynamic of everyone on set?
Tilda: We were sooo happy! I mean, it’s a little like – I don’t know about anybody else in Marvel movies, but for me, it was like being asked to join the circus. We all joined the circus and we were all given these incredible costumes and everybody in the Marvel universe that I’ve met so far is so psyched to be a part of it, even though there are some people who have been there for years…nobody’s jaded, everybody’s psyched, it’s a playground! And uh, and the cast, we were all so happy to know each other. We’re so happy to see each other here! We’ve all kind of— Benedict and I were in China just now, but today we’re all meeting our other cast members. We’re so happy.
How would you describe your character, the Ancient One, in one word?
Tilda: It’s a noun and not an adjective – it’s perspective.
