The Little Mermaid Review
By Myla Tosatto
Time to put on your water wings and nose clip and go UNDER THE SEA!!! Disney’s live-action The Little Mermaid is here and it’s fun!
Let’s dive in, shall we? Halle Bailey is our new Ariel, the beautiful princess with the siren’s voice. Bailey fills out her fins and scales perfectly. If you don’t delight in her fish-out-of-water naivete (and vocal prowess), you might have the soul of one of Ursula’s (Melissa McCarthy) poor unfortunates. McCarthy chews the scenery, and that is meant as a compliment. Ursula is one of the greatest Disney villains, and anyone portraying her should go big (and inky!). Jonah Hauer-King plays Prince Eric, Ariel’s legged love interest. He even gets a solo, so that’s exciting. Rounding out the crew are Daveed Diggs as the stoic and sarcastic Sebastian, Awkwafina as the flighty Scuttle, and Javier Bardem as King Triton.
The story is the same as the cartoon adaptation that the House of Mouse put out (that basically jumpstarted their animation domination reemergence) in 1989. Some of the lines* are the same lines from ‘89, even! The original film is so iconic, I can see why they did that. The 2023 movie clocks in at almost one full hour more than the original. The length makes the new movie not as tight of a film, but it does include the wonder and splendor of modern CGI. The audience really gets to go hang with the merpeople and fish!
Children are most definitely going to want to see this movie. If they have seen the original, they should be prepared for the scarier elements. Towards the beginning of the film, Ariel and Flounder (Jacob Tremblay) get chased by a frightening shark. The most alarming part of The Little Mermaid is when Ariel is dragged to the lair of Ursula. Even Movie Myla jumped. If you want to take the kiddos, maybe don’t go to an IMAX version, which might make the harrowing parts more hair-raising.
*Some songs have changed and some have been added and others, unfortunately, left out. R.I.P. Les Poissons. Quelle dommage! What a loss.
About the movie:
The beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure, “The Little Mermaid” stars singer and actress Halle Bailey (“grown-ish”) as Ariel; Tony Award® winner Daveed Diggs (“Hamilton,” “Snowpiercer”) as the voice of Sebastian; Jacob Tremblay (“Luca,” “Room”) as the voice of Flounder; Awkwafina (“Raya and the Last Dragon”) as the voice of Scuttle; Jonah Hauer-King (“A Dog’s Way Home”) as Prince Eric; Art Malik (“Homeland”) as Sir Grimsby; Noma Dumezweni (“Mary Poppins Returns”) as Queen Selina; with Oscar® winner Javier Bardem (“No Country for Old Men,” “Being the Ricardos”) as King Triton; and two-time Academy Award® nominee Melissa McCarthy (“Can You Ever Forgive Me?” “Bridesmaids”) as Ursula. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters, and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea, and while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric. While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land, but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy.
