The High Note Review
Besides eating at restaurants and seeing movies in actual theaters (and you know, going out without dying in general), I have been missing something else during our self-isolation- a fun film starring two strong women as the leads. Who knew that The High Note’s Tracee Ellis Ross and Dakota Johnson would fill a big quarantine sized hole in my heart.
Johnson plays Maggie, a hard-working, hard hustling assistant to Ellis Ross’s larger than life superstar, Grace. Maggie is trying to stake her claim in the music business while Grace is trying to navigate her mid life musical career.
It’s no secret that Movie Myla loves Tracee Ellis Ross with all of my heart. Her humor, style(!!!!) and laugh would get me to a movie theater under most circumstances (maybe just not right now). Her performance as a diva with brains and down to earth sensibilities may be her best role yet. She even shows off her musical chops to perfection. I’m sure I will be listening to the soundtrack on repeat through the spring.
Dakota Johnson has never been more relatable and likeable than she is in The High Note (unless you relate to Fifty Shades of Grey, and if you do, please do NOT leave any comments letting us know about it). Her Maggie is slightly awkward yet bold as a younger woman who knows what she wants and is smart and cunning enough to go after it.
This movie was written by a Flora Greeson (first time screenwriter) and directed by Nisha Ganatra. Expect to hear a lot more from them in the future.
Lest you think it’s a movie only about women, let me give a BIG shout out to the men in The High Note: Ice Cube (so many good one liners from him!), Kelvin Harrison Jr., Bill Pullman and Eddie Izzard. This movie is STACKED with talent.
This movie made me nostalgic for the wholesome feel good light comedies of the 80’s (not that Movie Myla is wholesome but sometimes I like a good throw back). You can enjoy it with your kids with its rating of PG-13. I suspect it got that rating from a VERY well-placed line that you will not find in the quote section of this blog. It is laugh out loud funny, though.

About The High Note
Set in the dazzling world of the L.A. music scene comes the story of Grace Davis (Tracee Ellis Ross), a superstar whose talent, and ego, have reached unbelievable heights. Maggie (Dakota Johnson) is Grace’s overworked personal assistant who’s stuck running errands but still aspires to her dream of becoming a music producer. Things come to a head when Grace’s long-time manager (Ice Cube) presents the singer with a choice that could alter the course of her career, and Grace must choose between playing it safe or listening to her heart in a decision that could change her life forever.
