The Climb Movie Review
By Myla Tosatto
We all have that friend who doesn’t have a filter and will do and say anything (sometimes YOU’RE that person, but I digress). The Climb is a comedy that revolves around the friendship of a kind yet hapless guy, Kyle (Kyle Marvin) and the toxic jerk mentioned above, Mike (Michael Angelo Covino). The movie revolves around Kyle needing to figure out a way to forgive his friend who steals his fiancé and ruins his Christmas tree.
The situation comes to a head when Kyle finds a new woman to marry, Marissa (Gayle Rankin). Marissa is also toxic but in a more subdued, bored manner. Marissa doesn’t take too much bull from anyone- not Kyle and certainly not Mike. Can Mike and Kyle’s friendship survive? More importantly, can it survive the mean girl whirlwind that is Marissa? Should it?
Marissa is standing in the way of their bond but Kyle’s clueless family is all about them rekindling their friendship. His mom (Talia Balsam) invites Mike to Christmas where his dad (George Wednt) reminisces about Mike’s football prowess while his sister (Eden Malyn) gives Mike eggnog and his grandmother (Sondra James) gives Mike advice. Kyle’s family is just as naive as Kyle.
This is a small comedy about friendship made by two real life friends, Michael Angelo Covino and Kyle Marvin (yes, the Mike and Kyle from above). It’s been the darling of the festival scene. And for good reason! It is a delightful movie that will entertain you on these dark days. It’s an unexpected buddy comedy told in seven acts that will leave you wanting more! Maybe Covino and Marvin will make a follow up film called The Descent?
