Today marks the 6th Big Slick Fundraiser in Kansas City. This isn’t just any fundraiser it is made up of 5 VERY talented actors and comedians who are all from Kansas City and are now friends! Today I was grateful to be a part of the Big Slick Kansas City Press Conference sitting directly in front of David Koechner (Anchorman), Eric Stonestreet (Modern Family) Rob Riggle (21 Jump Street), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), and Jason Sudeikis (Everything).
Rob Riggle shares with Huffington Post, “The event has increased in size, awareness, donations and celebrity attendance, but it still remains all about family: those families impacted by childhood illness and seeking care from the incredible doctors and team at Children’s Mercy; as well as my own family — and those of fellow co-hosts Paul Rudd, Jason Sudeikis, David Koechner and Eric Stonestreet — who volunteer countless hours to make Big Slick and the more than $2.2MM it’s raised (a record $1MM in 2014) possible.”
Each year these guys do an amazing job and getting tons of celebrities together to raise money for a VERY well known Kansas City Children’s Miracle Network Hospital called Children’s Mercy. This is no longer a local event, but definitely becoming national!
I was definitely on cloud nine (I found it!) being at this press conference! I have been lucky enough to interview Paul Rudd back in November and will get that chance again next week at the Marvel Ant-Man press junket. Although I have worked with ABC, Modern Family isn’t a show that needs much PR it totally sells itself! So I am not sure I would have EVER had the opportunity to sit this close to so many great guys! So forget the super fan that I am for movies and comedy…I am a teacher and when it comes to doing good for kids, I am very interested!
I am asked quite often when I am going to quit teaching…I don’t teach because I have to, I teach because I want to. I love knowing that there is a chance that I can make a difference. SO I LOVE that the Big Slick KC guys got together because they new that they can use their star powers to also make a difference and what a great philanthropy that I love!
The celebrity softball tournament that isn’t just ANY softball tournament it has some big names behind it! They do this so that they are able to create a big buzz to their organization!
So right now the 5 Big Slick Actors are in a competition on who can raise the most money! Go ahead and order a LIMITED EDITION Big Slick t-shirt with a friendly donation.
At the press conference Dr. Artman mentioned that the weekend doesn’t start until they say, “the boys are back in town”!
When it was my turn to ask a question, David called on me by pointing me out as “Snow White girl”. I was the only geek typing and taking notes on my computer during the conference. My laptop has snow white holding the Apple that glows. So I did get called on and I although I would love to geek out about movies and shows, it was best to learn about Children’s Mercy! I asked the guys what they have learned the most from the children they have seen while working on Big Slick, Jason jumped in with the sweetest and thorough answer on how they teach them, “gratefulness, humility, courage, and seeing the best in the situation!” I believe they each had a little bit to say but his answer gave a quiet “awww” from the crowd.
The press conference had a lot of compassion and a lot of humor. Someone toward the end asked Paul where the drinks were going to be after the game. For those not from Kansas City, after one of our Playoff game wins, Paul invited all of Kansas City on a local news station for a party at his moms. So when someone asked him this question his mom came out with a t-shirt that read “Kegger at my Moms House”.
The guys were able to tease and have fun, but they were all grounded on how a fundraiser that started as a poker tournament to raise $50 has grown to where last year it made over $2 Million to help Children’s Mercy hospital!
I wanted to share some of these photos that I took. After the conference the guys all played games with the kids at the hospital! It was heartwarming for sure! Now tonight they are all going to have fun and try to raise a lot of money!
Please keep in mind that media was allowed to walk around for about 10 minutes and then everyone was asked to leave so that the actors can really enjoy time with the kids!
Way to go guys! I love you all! I love Kansas City!!! And I love how this is quickly becoming nationally recognized fundraiser!
