EXCLUSIVE Star Wars Interview with Daisy Ridley as she Reveals a Bit About Rey! I was invited on an expense paid trip by Disney to cover the Star Wars Press Junket in LA. All opinions are my own!
The beautiful Daisy Ridley was gorgeous in person! It was so exciting being able to interview a lady that had so much poise and purpose! She had a little cold but it didn’t stop her from laughing and being so charismatic during our interview! Even when she had the sniffles during our interview, she was still amazing and pretty! She walks in the room and points to the daddy bloggers in the room, “Hey, you aren’t a mummy!” she tells them. 🙂 We all laugh of course! This was her personality throughout the entire “Star Wars Daisy Ridley Interview”.
Prior to interviewing her Kathleen Kennedy had referred to Rey’s character as “the new generation Luke Skywalker. So we started off the interview asking her how she felt about that! We learned a lot about Daisy and Rey during the interview! Did I mention how gorgeous she was, when she walked in the room she definitely lit it up! This is the start of Daisy’s career and she will always be REY!
During the interview we found out some amazing things like Daisy was not a huge Star Wars fan before this movie. She said that she instagrammed her reaction when getting a suitcase of merchandise!
Star Wars Daisy Ridley Interview
As you read this interview below, you are going to learn about Rey’s character. This is an exclusive interview. There were only 24 other media outlets in the room. So being able to read this information HERE, you are in the know with all of the Star Wars fun!
Question: When we were talking to Kathleen Kennedy earlier today, she referred Rey to your character as the new generation Luke Skywalker. How do you feel about that and what do you think about girls coming up in this generation that are going to see the film maybe for the first time?
Daisy Ridley: It was weird because I really didn’t think of myself in those terms when I was doing it. I think that might have been slightly overwhelming…Definitely the humble beginnings and an incredible story is the same as Luke. Obviously it is very exciting that I’m a girl and that more people hopefully will be able to relate to the story because of that.
Question: What female roles did you think about when playing Rey?
Daisy Ridley: Well it is weird. I kind of said this the other day and I didn’t articulated very well. There’s a reason for it, Matilda, again I didn’t think about it as I was doing it. Matilda is my favorite film and so they can’t make any wolves tip over, that kind of sense is obviously there and the stories are different….But they are both in a place that isn’t fulfilling and isn’t emotionally giving you what you need. Matilda obviously is in a family that doesn’t do that to her and Rey has no one. But to go on a journey and a self discovery and push yourself beyond the limit and meet people who bring the best out of you. I can definitely see those parallels.
Question: How does it feel to be entering a franchise like Star Wars?
Daisy Ridley: I’m glad I kind of didn’t know how far it reached. Because it was really only at the convention this year, the first convention we did, that I was like, “Oh my God. There are a lot of people here and everyone is here for the same reason.”
I think that would have been quite overwhelming if I had been dealing with that while also dealing with the fact that I’m just a young girl being thrust into this thing and I don’t quite know why I’m here and all that kind of stuff. I was already dealing with that so I’m glad that I wasn’t dealing with the rest of the stuff. Even during it, sometimes I was like, “this is like really cool.”
(Daisy continues and discusses that it is nice because she doesn’t think that everyone is a “super fan”. Which is true! I am a HUGE Star Wars fans but there are people that know tons more than I do. It doesn’t mean that I don’t LOVE Star Wars or even have Star Wars toys and collectibles. It just means that is okay to LOVE Star Wars, even if you are new fan or not “super fan”.)
Question: What was it like to see yourself as an action figure?
(Daisy talked about how weird it was to open up all the action figures of herself. Since she lives with her sister she was like “What are you doing? This is so weird. I can make a shrine to you!”)
Question: Can you tell us a little bit about the audition process?
Daisy Ridley: My audition process was really long. I’ve never been as nervous for an audtion as I was for it, I turned up an hour early. I was like, I can’t be an hour early, so I went to a coffee shop to sit and chill. Then I went in half an hour early, they were like, “no you need to come back, because you are still too early.”…(She talked about how she wasn’t allowed to tell people that were in the movie that she got the role, when she knew that she had.)
Question: What characteristics of Rey do you see in yourself?
Daisy Ridley: Obviously I see a lot of myself in her. Because it is me playing her. I think she is quite like myself like a person. I think everyone can be hard on themselves but I think all too often people are far too hard on themselves and it is not celebrated enough that people can actually enjoy themselves. But all the qualities I think maybe I possess in small thing I think Ray has a greater amount.
I like to think I’m kind of brave but she is far braver. I like to think I try and do the right thing but she far exceeds that. I think she’s kind of polish and she’s not she is nuance and I think that’s why she’s brilliant and so relatable. She’s far more of anything I think I could ever be. I guess because of her circumstances and the fact that she’s not real, I don’t know–but brave and honest and open…
(During the interview we asked her about what it felt to watch herself in the movie. She said that even Harrison Ford told her that he doesn’t like seeing himself in movies. She said she was so emotional. There was lots of crying because she realizes what a huge role this is for her. That she is part of something much bigger than she can ever imagine.)
We ended the interview talking about if Rey has a light saber in real life, what color would it be? She responded with, “A disco ball.” She said it would be to do harm but rather bet the party started!
So let me ask all of you…Are you ready to get the Star Wars party started?
