WOW! Tom Holland is charming, adorable, and has such a great personality. He makes me want to learn so much about him and his role as Peter Parker. This kid is a hit and a little heartthrob for those little ladies!
Jacab Batalon he is hilarious, super sweet and funny, and has the best laugh from an actor I have heard. This kid can truly let out the belly laughs like nothing I have ever heard. I would totally adopt him as my own child. What a great kid!
After my set visit, we went outside by the actors trailers and they had a little table and chairs set out for our interview. With a couple of chairs shy, I got to sit on the back of a golf cart that they just reversed right next to the table. It was very funny at the moment when we were sitting up in the cart for the interview. If you didn’t think you can love these guys enough then you were wrong. Interview them and you will be in awe of their spunk, character, and love for their roles in the film AND their friendship. I learned they were actually roomies now through filming. Such a small and intimate interview had Tom and Jacob both opening up! Even Jacob opened up with in on scene crush that we follow up with him about it during our press conference!
Spider-Man Homecoming Exclusive Set Interview with Spider-Man, Tom Holland & Jacob Batalon
Tom Holland: Oh my goodness do you want these chairs.
Jacob: I wasn’t going to give you my chair.
The first time you found out that you were casted as Spider-Man, what do you do? What do you say? How do you act? Who do you tell?
Tom: That was a crazy day for me. I was in my bed. I had just lost at playing golf with my dad. I was just scrolling through Instagram and Marvel had posted a photo of Spider-Man saying, ‘go to our website to find out who the next Spider-Man is’. So I was like ahhhhh that won’t be real they would ring me. At least that they would ring me me and be like, “Hey dude…” So I went to the website anyways and I opened up and the first thing there was new Spider-Man thing. But I closed my computer because I was so petrified on what the verdict was going to be. I opened it up and it had cast me. I LOST MY MIND. My poor dog was so scared on what was going on. It was GREAT it was so fun. But then my brother Harry that is so savvy with computers and stuff was like they were probably hacked they would have definitely ring you. So I rang my agents and eventually Kevn rang me up and said, “We want you to be our Spider-Man.” So I was like, “I know dude, you put it on your Instagram.”
Jacob: “That is dope though.”
Tom: Yes, I was lucky that I was the first person to find out because in like an hour it was like on the BBC news and stuff. And I had found out really before anyone else. I was lucky.
Since Spider-Man has been done, was it hard for you to find your own version of Spider-Man?
Tom: Yeah. It is difficult to not take your influence on what Toby and Andrew did because they had such special things on what they did with the role. I think one of the main things for us is making sure we see a kid. We have seen the billionaire, we have seen the soldier, we have seen the God and now it is important that we see what the kid can do…
What is the craziest part of production so far with all of the crazy sets and stunts you have done?
Tom: Trying to put up with him.
Jacob: Bottom line I make the movie better.
Tom: I have never been the lead role of the movie before. So I was like do I get a break every. And they were like no not really. I has been really great and I have been so well looked after and everyone has been really supportive of me. It has been a really tough road but has been made by the amazing people that work here.
Jacob: I think what is so great about this movie too is that Marvel is such a family. So when you work with these people they know you for life. It is really a sweet and genuine environment all of the time. It is really humbling to be a part of it.
Tom: How much did they pay you to say that.
Jacob: It is in the contract. (Joking.)
Do you guys read all of the social media and news that is coming out.
Jacob: There is a lot of a mix of hate you and love you. The people that love you are really gracious they say some really nicest stuff and can’t wait for the movie to come out. Then there are those people that say really rude things.
Tom: You have to say it is funny.
Jacob: They like to judge….
Tom: I am going to stop you there.
Tom: Since ComicCon we have had such a huge amount of support for us from social media. It has really given us much wind to push toward the end of the movie. And also now all of the big hitters have have arrived…Robert has shown up and Jon Favreau has been here. It has really been the most perfect way to finish the movie is to finish with them.
Jacob: It has been a lot more professional with them around.
So in the movie you shoot webs, but if you can have any superhero power what would it be?
Tom: We actually get this asked this a lot. I can even tell you what your is. It is flying right.
Jacob: And yours is teleport.
Tom: We know each other so well.
How long did it take your friendship to build?
Tom: It was pretty instant.
Jacob: From like the audition.
Tom: It is funny we are actually shooting the scene that Jacob auditioned with. Since then it is amazing to see how far we have become. From day one we were thrown in the deep end we had a really difficult scene to do. Jon was really cool to making sure we bonded and stuff before were shooting. And he lives with us now. I am here with my best friend from home. He came over one and he just hasn’t left yet. He has been here for nearly a month and a half and hasn’t moved back.
Jacob: You know I am not going to lie, I did complain about the hotel I was staying at.
There was one moment where I said to Harrison Is he going to go? He has moved in. And we have loved having him.
Jacob: Before we started filming they wanted us to make this toy together. This huge LEGO death star.
{{{{There is tons about the Death Star and building here if you want to go back and listen to the audio. They thought they were building it for team building but then someone was like, we need that Death Star you built for a prop. They didn’t know they were building props. 🙂 }}}}}
Was it easy for you to grasp the NY accent?
Tom: Yeah I mean I as an actor I love working in an accent because it immediately separates you who you are as a person. Being from England all of the TV we watch is American, All the music we listen to is American…..It was easy to pick up at home. The thing I found was difficult in which I think my dialect coach helped me really well with is making sure it was a New York accent. We recorded people in New York with picked up little phrases that only people in New York say like, “Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah…..” I say that all of the time in the movie. So we really try to dial in a proper Queens accent.
Do you see yourself ever going back to your skills? Do you use your dancing and eugility skills in Spider-Man?
Tom: Every single day. Every single day. Even if there is not a stunt, Jon is like, “you couldn’t just do a flip off that could you?” “If you need me too, Jon (Watts) … WHY?” “Just because it looks cool.”…..Yeah it’s been what I think is the most useful skill I have learned in my life has come from David ?? my old gym teacher. He would teach me when I was a kid and for this it has been a godsend To be able to move with the stunt guys I had months before we began shooting. We could train and we did this really cool sequence which we All collaborated on and it has been a real help to me.
What is it like wearing the suit?
Tom: It was one of the most amazing experiences of my whole life the first time I put it on. It quickly became really difficult to remain in it for such a long time. The mask, the suit is so tight that the mask really pulls down on my nose. We figured out a really quick way to get out of it. The first week I wouldn’t go to the toilet all day because I couldn’t get it off. It would take ages. I always have to remind myself that when something is a bit uncomfortable there is a line of actors that would kill to be in my position. I am so grateful and as much as the suit is uncomfortable it is the coolest thing I could have ever asked for.
What is it like to not be in any movie but be in a Marvel movie?
Jacob: This is the first huge thing I have done. I have never been pampered so much in my life. It is kind of crazy. In between takes there is hair and makeup are always attending to you. I am not use to that stuff so it is quite annoying to be honest. I don’t like when people are all up in my business and stuff. I am really big headed now, sorry guys.
Tom: He wasn’t like that on day one. He really wasn’t.
Tom: For me, to be a part of one of these movies is mind blowing. I remember watching Iron Man for the first time when I was nine. I could have never imagined. That I would be here one day be shooting.
Tom: The funny thing, my best friend Harrison and I had always use to have a fight on who would win in a fight Spider-Man or Batman. I use to always think Spider-Man would win. I now can be like you know how I know Spider-Man would win, because I am Spider-Man and when you are Batman we can have the same argument.
Did you read comics when you were kids?
Jacob: No actually I am not even into comics that way. I literally am not.
Tom: I read comics as I was a kid but not to a great extent but there is a Marvel act where you have everything. I started off reading Spider-Man comics and extended off to everything. I read….(list offs comics). My phone is lit with screenshots from the comics. We had to pose the other day that didn’t look quite right on the side of the wall that didn’t look quite right. So I showed Jon a photo and he was like you are right so we changed everything….
How do you guys relate to your characters in real life?
Tom: You know I think one of the reasons that Peter Parker is one of the favorite superheroes for kids is because everyone can relate to him. Especially boys, everyone goes through not doing their homework, trying to ask the girl to the dance, being late to school.
Jacob: Basically the whole high school bit.
Tom: Yes basically the whole high school part because kids that is so relatable. And for me I never did my homework, I always forgot to do it… Probably not good for a mom blog. Just to be a kid lost in the world, every kid is like that at some point. I was and I am sure you were and for me it was really easy to recreate that feeling.
Jacob: It has been like that for the most part it has been hard doing high school things all over again because I did not enjoy high school. It has been fun living that part in the sense and sincerity….
Tom: I went to a high school in the Bronx for two days undercover with a fake name and I put an accent on and just because American high schools are so different than the school I went to. I had to wear a suit and tie everyday and it was just boys. And it was crazy,, And to experience it on a completely different level was so amazing and so helpful for the movie. It is funny I was try9ing to document it all and make little gag wheels so that maybe they can use it for the credits or the movie.
Tom: There is a movie of me filming myself in the classroom and there is a teacher behind me. He sees me filming and throws a board marker and it hits me at the back of the head. I’d show you the movie and it was so funny. I felt so much back in school again. I was always a goodie goodie in school and I was like I was going to be that kid that never listened. When that happened I was like, “I am sorry sir. I apologize. That will never happen again. I really apologize.” So I became a 15 year old boy. It was funny. It was fun.
There is a lot of talk of where an action movie meets a John Hughes movie?
Jacob: The first two weeks we were filming were literally at a high school doing all of the high school scenes. A week after that we started doing all of the Spider-Man stuff. That is when it really started to come together. At the beginning it was like regular and it felt like we were doing an Indie movie. There was no special stunts or anything. Then when you start putting on the suit everything started to become serious. That is when the green screens came in…it was crazy.
Tom: One of the nice things about the action sequences, you are still quite constantly reminded it is a John Hughes movie. As soon as I do something that I think is really bad a**, I make a mistake and i don’t look bada** anymore. This is the coolest and least cool Spider-Man you will see in a really long time.
Have you gotten star struck with any of most seasoned actors you have worked with?
Jacob: I am not going to lie. Marisa Tomei is in this film and I have a couple of scenes with them. I am not going to lie I am deathly so attracted to her. She is really beautiful and she is really funny and sweet.
Tom: You know people are going to read this. This is going out to the WORLD.
Jacob: I want the world to know. I did try a little extra hard when she was working with us. That is all I am going to say because I don’t want to embarrass myself.
Tom: I think you did that already. I mean for me, we had a really surreal experience yesterday with some of the guys. To see them work together was a real privilege. To see it first hand was amazing.
Jacob: I think that as an actor you are pretty sure people have done this for a long time and watch them go for it was really…I couldn’t even really believe what I was watching.
Tom: It was great!
How was it like working with Robert Downey Jr.?
Tom: He is so fun to work with.
Jacob: He is hilarious.
Tom: He would be like oh I changed your lines.
Jacob: And Marvel gives him the power. The producers let him do that.
Tom: It is great he is a real actor through. You read a scene and you can take it in one direction. And you work together. We sat together and he was like where are we going to take this. We really workshopped it together and decided which parts we thought the scene should go down. And he would go and pitch it to the producers and the directors and it was great. I really think we came up with something really special and the fans are really going to love what we came up with. It is great to really work with someone like that that has the ability to bring that to set. He really is just a bada**. He IS Robert Downey Jr. and IRON MAN!
Jacob: He was showing me how to get out of headlock yesterday.
Tom: At one point he punched me in the arm a little too hard. He was teaching us Kung Fu and stuff. It was awesome. It was really cool.
If you could take anything from the set from filming, what would you take?
Tom: Robert’s Audi.
Jacob: Yeah, his watch.
Tom: Wink Wink! He has the nicest car.
Jacob: Actually on set there is a Millennium Falcon they built and I want that.
Tom: The lego Millennium Falcon
Jacob: It is all build up and it is all nice.
Tom: No if I can take anything from set I would probably take…
Jacob: I will take an assistant….I would take Marisa Tomei but she isn’t on set every day.
Tom: I would probably take the suit home, but I couldn’t put it on my own so it would kind of hopeless. I have a foam mannequin of myself which is kind of weird. So I would probably take that and the suit and put it on and put it in a glass box somewhere. Yeah!
