Sorry to Bother You
Review by Myla Tosatto
Sorry to Bother You (written and directed by Boots Riley) had me from the very first scene. I knew I was going to love it. KNEW IT. I was right. But what I didn’t realize was that the first scene was going to be VERY different from the last scenes. That’s just a little heads up for you there. No spoilers. No judgments.
What kind of movie is Sorry to Bother You? Is it a drama? A comedy? Perhaps a social commentary? Futuristic reality? Straight up sci-fi? Why, yes. Yes, it is. To all of that and probably more, my head is still spinning 24 hours after seeing it. I don’t think it can be defined. Which leads to a very entertaining and provocative movie. I won’t even bother trying to tell you the plot. It is trippy fun.
And how about that cast? WOW. Lakeith Stanfield, Tessa Thompson, Steven Yeun, Jermaine Fowler, Armie Hammer, Danny Glover, Omari Hardwick and Kate Berlant bring it. I mean, for real. They are deep into this movie and just keep giving with their performances.
Movie Myla really enjoyed this movie. Having said that, I realize that this movie isn’t for everybody. It goes out on a limb and never comes back. It is at once based in reality (financial anxiety, labor practices, race relations, societal woes and personal responsibility) and also so far from it that you may have a hard time wrapping your head around it. Go in with an open mind. Even if it isn’t your cup of tea, you will get lots of laughs and plenty to think about. It is a heavy movie, yet light.
Don’t bring the kids. It may screw them up forever. Now playing in theaters!
