Somewhere in Queens
Review by Myla Tosatto
In Somewhere in Queens, Leo Russo (Ray Romano) lives in a traditional house in Queens with his wife Angie (Laurie Metcalf) and their son. He has dinner every Sunday (presumably after church) with his extended family. He works for his father in the family business. He attends weekly celebrations a the local event space. His life is safe. Normal. He would never do anything to threaten this life. He would never be interested in a client (Jennifer Esposito) or go against his brother (Sebastian Maniscalco). He wouldn’t ruffle the feathers of his controlling father (Tony Lo Bianco). What he will do, though, is want a different life for his son Sticks (Jacob Ward).
Sticks is a great basketball player and Leo sees his son’s way out of his mindless existence via a basketball scholarship to a university in Pennsylvania. Leo wants nothing more than to shelter his sensitive son from his overbearing family. Sticks unexpectedly finds first love with Dani (Sadie Stanley). Now many of his future decisions are going to be based on her wants and expectations.
Somewhere in Queens is a quiet, indie movie directed by Ray Romano. Leo, like Ray Romano’s most famous starring role Ray Barone in Everybody Loves Raymond, is a hapless chump. But Leo yearns for more. Romano injects Leo with this longing. Laurie Metcalf (another sitcom staple) is wisely cast as a Queens mom. She’s quick and sharp and brings most of the heaviest moments (and the funniest). This movie isn’t big and splashy, and thankfully there’s no laugh track. Just fine actors telling the story of their family. Who can’t relate to that? Who can’t relate to countless meatballs on a Sunday afternoon?
About the movie:
Leo Russo (Ray Romano) lives a simple life in Queens, New York with his wife Angela (Laurie Metcalf), their shy but talented son “Sticks” (Jacob Ward), and Leo’s close-knit network of Italian-American relatives and neighborhood friends. Happy enough working at the family construction business alongside his father (Tony Lo Bianco) and younger brother (Sebastian Maniscalco), Leo lives each week for Sticks’ high-school basketball games, never missing a chance to cheer on his only child as he rules the court as a star athlete. When the high-school senior gets a surprising and life-changing opportunity to play basketball in college, Leo jumps at the chance to provide a plan for his future, away from the family construction business. But when sudden heartbreak threatens to derail Sticks, Leo goes to unexpected lengths to keep his son on this new path.
