Do you like your comedies dark? I mean, REALLY dark? Do you like your movies provocative? Do you like your movies to have a feminist slant? Do you like your films to denounce toxic masculinity? Promising Young Women Review
Promising Young Woman almost defies description. Though not for everyone (it is REALLY not for the little ones), it is a heckeva’ ride! It had me from the opening scene. This is a dynamite film with apocalyptic consequences for almost every character involved. On top of that list is our protagonist, no, not protagonist- antihero, Cassie (the ALWAYS terrific Carey Mulligan). Cassie has a chip on her shoulder. A huge, life shattering chip that she will never be able to shake. In order to make herself feel a little better, she takes it out on random men. She poses as a very drunk and alone woman to bait men into taking her home. And what happens there is a little American Psycho, a little John Wick, a little Killing Eve. . .
And speaking of Killing Eve, the writer/director has been responsible for several Killing Eve episodes so you know you are in good hands with Emerald Fennell. Fennell starts off strong and never lets up. You are on a wild ride with Cassie from start to finish.
This is a must-see movie in the #metoo era. It is unsettling and unnerving and oh, so good. The audience may look at Cassie like a girl looking for vengeance. Movie Myla looks at her like a girl looking for closure. Messy, horrific, hateful, spiteful glorious closure. This is definitely my favorite movie of 2020. Expect an Oscar nod for Mulligan for Best Actress and Best Original Screenplay (and maybe Best Director) for Fennell. It is that good, folks.
Now playing!
