Exploring Kansas City and our different fun festivals is one of my favorite things to do! Every year, Powell Gardens flies in tons of butterflies, caterpillars, eggs, cocoons, and more to celebrate butterflies! Powell Gardens is a Botanical Garden that is absolutely beautiful! It is more than just butterflies! You can enjoy the Butterfly Breezeway, Face Painting, Pot Painting, the Butterfly Conservatory, Caterpillar Petting Zoo, Butterfly Catching, AN ENTIRE lego exhibit, Homemade Ice Cream, a Parade, Story time, and SO MUCH MORE!
Powell Gardens is located near Kansas City in Bates City! It is just about 20 minutes from Lee’s Summit area. You never feel like you really leave the city but definitely feel like you are entering paradise! They have everything you can imagine including a sweep little chapel, and designated picnic ares if you wish to create an entire family day at Powell Gardens! If you miss the Butterfly Festival, they also have a Tractor Festival and a Jack’O Lantern Festival coming soon!
We didn’t realize that we could bring our swimsuits and let the kids run through the fountains to cool off, but there were many kids who were doing that! There were tons of arts and crafts, hiking trails, bridges to cross, pictures to take, scavenger hunts to do…and still MORE! My daughter is obsessed with butterflies, we also love flowers, but we definitely make it a point!
The Martha Jane Phillips Starr Butterfly has 500 butterflies including 20 species from the American tropics, he majestic Blue Morpho, and fascinating moths from around the world. You have to go through one room before you go in there and exit to make sure that none of the species escape! They can’t have them mating with our native butterflies.
EDUCATION: The Caterpillar Petting Zoo teaching kids the entire life cycle of the butterfly! These are all local butterflies so some may or may not fly in and out.
