When watching this film I wasn’t sure what to think because I read that it was 97 minutes long. I guess that included the opening and ending credits because the movie totally made references to it being only 85 minutes long. I was hopeful that it would hold my kids’ attention and it did!
To summarize the movie in as few words as possible, there is a dog named Hank. He wants to be a samurai but the samurais are all cats. He is used as a pawn for a leader-hungry cat; eventually, his adventures are a bit crazy.
The movie was creative and surprising and it wasn’t what I suspected with a twist at the end. There was a surprise ending and definitely some surprise edits in the film.
Although this is a movie I felt like it had the vibes of some good ‘ol fashion Sunday morning cartoon edits. There were some moments that they talked to the audience and others where they surprisingly switched scenes.
The movie had several themes that are important for kids to remember.
One of the main themes is that you should focus on your strengths and that you can’t be something you are not. This point is made throughout the film several times.
Another theme is that we are all the same although we all look different. There are dogs, cats, and other animals we all look different and do things differently but we all have a heart and purpose.
Another theme is that cats and dogs can live in the same world together. Yes, we are all different and yes we can find a way to get along.
The kids loved the three Star Wars references in the film. They said it was their favorite part. I thought that was unique since the movie is from a different studio than Star Wars and they still were willing to make obvious references to their Star Wars jokes!
The movie was fun to see in theaters because it was new with new characters and a unique story. It wasn’t a sequel so it wasn’t like you needed to watch five hours of movies before this one! It was a fun break and the 4 of us had fun seeing it!
Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank
The movie stars HUGE name actors and just to name a couple of them: Ricky Gervais and Samuel L. Jackson star in this film!
I included the trailer below and it is great with the martial arts humor. I even think it is funny how they had Samuel L. Jackson almost say one of his favorite words. The older kids will think it’s funny and the younger ones won’t notice. I interviewed him once for The Incredibles 2 and it was a great experience.
