All the Money in the World
Review by Myla Tosatto
All the Money in the World is surely 2017’s biggest movie curiosity. Kevin Spacey is out- Christopher Plummer is in! In just a few weeks, Ridley Scott had to edit all of Kevin Spacey out of one of the main roles of J. Paul Getty to make it to a 2017 theatrical release. No small feat considering it is the second most important role. The director was up to the test. Scott has never shied away from a challenge (see Alien, Gladiator, Blade Runner, etc.). To my untrained eye, the transition was flawless.
Michelle Williams plays Gail Harris, ex daughter-in-law to Getty and mother to kidnapped Paul (Charlie Plummer). Williams is hitting her mother bear stride in trying to get back her imperiled cub ala Sally Fields or Meryl Streep. This is definitely a role to watch for when the Oscar nominations are announced in February. Rounding out the cast is Mark Wahlberg as Fletcher Chase, ex-CIA and fix it man for Mr. Getty.
Kids should absolutely not see this unless you want to scare the ever-loving daylights out of them or you want to teach them the importance of people’s lives over money and material items. The last one is a pretty good lesson for our times unfortunately.
This makes for an interesting crime story since the bad guy is the grandfather of the victim and not the kidnappers. Do take in consideration that the screenwriter, David Scarpa, took great liberties with the events that the movie is based on. But however you look at it, greed is not good. Just don’t tell Gordon Gekko that.
All the Money in the World is NOW playing in theaters!
follows the kidnapping of 16-year-old John Paul Getty III (Charlie Plummer) and the desperate attempt by his devoted mother Gail (Michelle Williams) to convince his billionaire grandfather (Christopher Plummer) to pay the ransom. When Getty Sr. refuses, Gail attempts to sway him as her son’s captors become increasingly volatile and brutal. With her son’s life in the balance, Gail and Getty’s advisor (Mark Wahlberg) become unlikely allies in the race against time that ultimately reveals the true and lasting value of love over money.
