This ain’t your child’s Toy Story movie and that’s a good thing! That’s not to say that the Toy Story movies aren’t some of the greatest movies ever made (BECAUSE THEY ARE!!) but Lightyear has a bit of an adult spin to it.
Sure, you can go buy the Sox the Cat toys and get all-new Buzz Lightyear action figures for your kids but this movie is a payoff for being a fan of the franchise for over 25 years.
Remember in the original Toy Story movie when Andy brought Buzz home to live with Woody and the gang after seeing a Buzz Lightyear movie? THIS is that movie. Clever, right?
Director Angus MacLane (no stranger to the Toy Story movies, btw) and writers give a lovely little standalone film that will give you some laughs and some sniffles.
Instead of Tim Allen, Chris Evans voices the Buzz Lightyear character after whom the toy is made. His best friend and co-Space Ranger is Alisha Hawthorne (Uzo Aduba).
The two of them go on a mission that goes sideways. They get stuck on a planet far from home. Buzz takes responsibility for the failed mission and does everything in his power to right the wrong.

This takes us into pure sci-fi movie territory, complete with a HAL-type computer companion in Sox (Peter Sohn). The movie becomes very timey wimey wibbly wobbly as Buzz thinks he is gone for minutes but to everyone else, he is gone for years at a time.
Eventually, Buzz teams up with Hawthorne’s granddaughter Izzy (Keke Palmer), and Mo Morrison (Taika Waititi).
You don’t need to have seen the Toy Story movies to enjoy this gem, but why wouldn’t you? The Toy Story movies are the best that Disney/Pixar has to offer! So, if you haven’t seen them or need to rewatch them- DO SO! To infinity and beyond!!
Lightyear is not another Toy Story movie, it is the movie on where the toy Buzz was based. I wanted to prep your brains so that you know what to expect when you see the movie.
Be sure to also print off our Lightyear coloring pages!
About the Movie
A sci-fi action-adventure and the definitive origin story of Buzz Lightyear, the hero who inspired the toy, “Lightyear” follows the legendary Space Ranger after he’s marooned on a hostile planet 4.2 million light-years from Earth alongside his commander and their crew. As Buzz tries to find a way back home through space and time, he’s joined by a group of ambitious recruits and his charming robot companion cat, Sox. Complicating matters and threatening the mission is the arrival of Zurg, an imposing presence with an army of ruthless robots and a mysterious agenda.
