Two-time Academy Award®–winner Emma Thompson and fellow double Oscar®-winner Tom Hanks topline Disney’s “Saving Mr. Banks,” inspired by the extraordinary, untold backstory of how Disney’s classic “Mary Poppins” made it to the screen.
When Walt Disney’s daughters begged him to make a movie of their favorite book, P.L. Travers’ “Mary Poppins,” he made them a promise—one that he didn’t realize would take 20 years to keep. In his quest to obtain the rights, Walt comes up against a curmudgeonly, uncompromising writer who has absolutely no intention of letting her beloved magical nanny get mauled by the Hollywood machine. But, as the books stop selling and money grows short, Travers reluctantly agrees to go to Los Angeles to hear Disney’s plans for the adaptation.
For those two short weeks in 1961, Walt Disney pulls out all the stops. Armed with imaginative storyboards and chirpy songs from the talented Sherman brothers, Walt launches an all-out onslaught on P.L. Travers, but the prickly author doesn’t budge. He soon begins to watch helplessly as Travers becomes increasingly immovable and the rights begin to move further away from his grasp.
It is only when he reaches into his own childhood that Walt discovers the truth about the ghosts that haunt her, and together they set Mary Poppins free to ultimately make one of the most endearing films in cinematic history.
Disney presents “Saving Mr. Banks,” directed by John Lee Hancock, produced by Alison Owen, Ian Collie and Philip Steuer, and written by Kelly Marcel and Sue Smith. Executive producers are Paul Trijbits, Andrew Mason, Troy Lum and Christine Langan. The film will release in U.S. theaters on December 13, 2013, limited, and open wide on December 20, 2013.
Anyone can enter and anyone can WIN. Just know that this prize is for Kansas City readers who can actually attend the screening. So if you don’t live in Kansas City I would suggest signing up for one in your area. I know AMC Stubs members were getting free passes too! I will be choosing winners at random!!!

After watching Mary Poppins one time, I tried to clean up our playroom by snapping my fingers and singing the Spoonful of Sugar song. It didn’t work! 🙁 My favorite Disney memory is watching the Electric Parade on our last night at the park.

I enjoyed The Lion King with my older daughter. After, watching it over and over she got way to fascinated with the LION KING (ZUMBA)! She sang every song to it and mimicked Mr. PIG ( I believe that was the pig’s name). There, was this one time she screamed while in the bathroom, “MOM, LION KING, LION KING!” I was in the kitchen and went to the bathroom and of course she hadn’t flushed the toilet yet……….THE REST YOU CAN FIGURE IT OUT WHAT IT WAS!!! LOL….She still said BYE, BYE LION KING, after flushing!!!!
MUY MAS CHISTOSO!!!

Growing up in a small farm town, I recall visiting a movie theatre only once during my grade school years. Sadly, the movie we saw on that one occasion was not a Disney movie. We were blessed, however to have soundtracks of several Disney movies and Mary Poppins was one of our favorites. For religious reasons, my parents opted not to have a television. In the home for most of my childhood, but we had the most fun playing those records, learning every line, imagining and feeling the mood of every song. Years later I watched Mary Poppins while babysitting and instantly fell in love. Julie Andrews is just divine. She is the perfect balance of discipline, love and fun. This movie has a special place in my heart.
