As the world mourns the death of Superman heroes are forced to face the return of Steppenwolf who has returned to find mother. Sensing an imminent attack Batman (Ben Affleck) attempts to recruit a league of superheroes. After failing to recruit Aquaman (Jason Mamoa) he is joined by Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) after the Mother Box the Amazons are entrusted to gaurd is taken by Steppenwolf. She helps him recruit Cyborg (Ray Fisher), Flash (Ezra Miller), and eventually they are joined by Aquaman and must devise a plan to defeat Steppenwolf, otherwise the Motherboxes will destroy Earth.
This movie would be very good without Ezra Miller, but with him it is a wonderful mix of action and comedy. Ezra plays Barry Allen (The Flash) perfectly, adds levity to very tense moments of the movie while still showing off as an overall stud. Affleck’s Batman is fine and I think if he didn’t have the misfortune of being the caped crusader that followed Christian Bale his performance would be much better received. Jason Mamoa is terrific as Aquaman, and a huge departure from what most people think of when they picture the orange and green version from the comic books. Gal Gadot’s follow-up to Wonder Woman is equally as impressive and she more than holds her own on the crowded screen.
***Spoiler (Kinda)***
Henry Cavill’s Superman in Justice League is the best he’s been in the role in my opinion, and with nods to the future, specifically Green Lantern the hope I came away from the movie with is that they will reboot that franchise and put the miserable Ryan Renolds (and it wasn’t his fault) behind them. What DC has done over the last few movies should give comic book fans optimism for what DC can do going forward.
Justice League is now playing in theaters!
