Is the new movie, Priscilla, appropriate for kids?
It’s rated R for drug use and some strong language. There is quite a bit of drug usage being that this a movie about Priscilla Presley (Cailee Spaeny) and Elvis (Jacob Elordi). Elvis abused drugs from way back and he brought Priscilla into his world when she was just 14 years old. That’s a lot for children to wrap their heads around (or parents of children). The better question is, will kids want to see it?
Probably not. They may have heard of Elvis (he has transcended time and has become immortal in America), but they might not care about his marriage to Priscilla. The drug use and treatment of Priscilla will probably make the younger generation recoil.
What is the plot of Priscilla?
The plot is basically the story of the meeting, loving, marriage, and leaving of Elvis told through the eyes of Priscilla. It is less of a story and more of a series of vignettes of Priscilla’s life. The director, Sophia Coppola, is known for sets, costumes, and wistful longing looks from her leading ladies. Expect lots of period pieces, beautiful gowns, and Priscilla lying in bed or the tub or looking out a window in a wistful way.
What movies would make a great companion film for Priscilla?
If viewers enjoy Priscilla, they will also probably also like Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, Sophia Coppola’s Marie Antonette and Virgin Suicides and 1980’s Coal Miner’s Daughter.
What is the best thing about Priscilla?
The best thing about Priscilla was the lack of Elvis’s manager, Colonel Tom Parker. He’s on the phone being a jerk, but the audience doesn’t have to see him. If only Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis had gone the same route. Then we would have been spared Tom Hank’s performance.
Would Priscilla Presley appreciate this adaptation of her life story?
Yes! Sophia Coppola wrote the screenplay from Priscilla’s memoirs and Priscilla was an executive producer. She accompanied Coppola to interviews and screenings.
