Are you thinking of taking your entire family to see a musical? You may ask, “Is Starlight’s The Little Mermaid Broadway Series appropriate for kids?” I am hopeful to answer all your questions below!
Starlight presents The Little Mermaid Broadway Series in Kansas City and we had the opportunity to attend opening night! We were provided free media tickets to share our experience.

Is Starlight’s The Little Mermaid Broadway Series Appropriate for Kids?
What is the musical rated?
I don’t think musicals have the same ratings as movies, but it is PG. You might want to consider the references to death/loss and of course, villains aren’t the nicest (but my favorite performance went to Ursula!)!
What are the kid experiences?
From 6:30 to 8:00 p.m., they have an array of exciting pre-show activities your kids will love.
Near the fountain, you’ll find a giant inflatable clam perfect for photo opportunities.
On the north lawn, StoneLion Puppets will be showcasing their impressive giant jellyfish puppets.
Additionally, there’s a temporary tattoo table located at the north side pergola.
For a special treat for mom or dad, you can purchase a custom ‘blue margarita’ cocktail at several of our drink stands. Check the map below for the exact locations.
Now if it is your kid’s first time at Starlight, you can pick up a free pin and some activities to make their day even special.
Is the show too long for little kids?
The show is not too long but the show is late. You will be there until 10:30 pm. There is an intermission an hour or so into the first act so taking some time to walk around, get a snack, and stretch should rejuvenate them for a GREAT second act. You really won’t want to miss it. The show doesn’t start until 8pm, so you might need to take an afternoon nap the day of the show.
Are there any explicit content or scenes that may not be suitable for my family?
There are some storm scenes but it never really felt scary or intense. We sat around several very young kids and the storms and theatrical lighting fazed none.
Does the musical have any controversial or sensitive themes?
It is The Little Mermaid and it was well done and well produced, and there wasn’t anything I can remember. The main theme is of course to follow your heart!
Musical Review
Our entire family loved the show!
The costume designs were amazing. The casting was well done. The special effects with the swimming will mesmerize you and your kids. Overall, the special effects were really good. Even the eels had some kids around us asking how they were moving. Cheers to the choreography!
The orchestra was really good as well. Sometimes underappreciated because they are hidden in the pit.
