Is Inside Out 2 Appropriate for Families?
What is Inside Out 2 Rated?
Inside Out 2 is rated PG for parental guidance. I believe it was closer to a G on the rating scale. Little ones would enjoy the movie as much as the bigger kids. If you didn’t think that Inside Out was too scary for your kids, then I think this one is okay. You might have the littles ask you what “puberty” is but a simple “growing up” is the easiest and most honest way to answer that question.
What are the main themes of the movie?
Riley is older and about to go to high school and new emotions have set in including anxiety, embarrassment, envy, and ennui (boredom). Riley has some new stress, and emotions, begins to have some body odor, shares about having a crush on a video game character, and all of those things that start happening when she hits middle school.
She struggles with dealing with change and trying to fit in with older kids. The themes should make some great discussions with your kids after the movie.
One of the things I noticed in the movie was that her family island was much smaller than her friends’ island. My family always comes first so this is a good topic you can have with your kids about whether or not they noticed.
Another good theme is there is a part in the movie where some of the emotions get bottled up. Talking about how we try to do this has people and how eventually they break open would be a good conversation to have with your kids.
Sarcasm is also another strong part of the movie. We can talk about what it is and how we try to use it as humor but it can affect other people.
Is it too long for younger children?
The movie is 100 minutes long. I did see some little ones need to have a bathroom break in the middle of the movie. There were parts of it that felt like they were a bit too long but were needed for the advancement of the story.
Is the movie available in 2D or 3D?
The movie is in 2D, and we got to watch it in IMAX for the screening. The quality of the screen and sound were amazing. I would highly recommend seeing it on a high-quality screen.
Does the movie have any controversial or sensitive themes?
In their recent movies, Disney has done a lot to take a stand on what they believe is ethical and what others find political. I tried to pay close attention because I am frequently asked these questions.
Riley is going to a high school camp to try to make the hockey team and she admires one of their best players. That is the extent of the emotion. I didn’t see any strong relationship feelings other than envy and admiration for the upperclassman on the team.
The movie didn’t show any romantic feelings at all toward any characters. Riley has had child crushes but nothing romantic yet from the movies. If you were hoping or not hoping to see LGBTQIA+, I didn’t see anything and if it was there it was so secondary to the plot you would most likely miss it.
Does it have a short?
No, I thought since this was a Pixar film a short would sneak its way into the movie, but it didn’t. Somewhere on Disney+, you could find an Inside Out short called “Riley’s First Date”.
I WISH it had a short! There is nothing more exciting than a Pixar short!
Were there any easter eggs?
I am the wrong person to ask when looking for these. I couldn’t find the Pizza Planet, A113, or even the Pixar ball. I did notice some repeats of the songs from the first movie and a reference to broccoli. There are also some implied Mickey Mouse Clubhouse/Dora the Explorer (I know that isn’t Disney) references. Did you see any?
