Is Haunted Mansion Appropriate for Kids?
Like the rides at Disneyland and Walt Disney World, Disney’s Haunted Mansion is appropriate for all ages. There are some jump scares and scary elements, but it could be argued that it is actually less scary than the ride. Just remember that just because kids CAN see it, doesn’t mean that all children should. Kids who scare easily should maybe sit this one out. It is rated PG-13 for scary action. The child in the movie is 9 years old, so maybe that would be a good rule for age appropriateness.
What is Haunted Mansion About?
This isn’t a remake or a sequel to the 2003 movie of the same name. The new movie is about a single mom (Rosario Dawson) and her young son (Chase Dillon) who move into a house outside of New Orleans. While trying to make the house into a bed and breakfast, they find the house to be haunted by many spirits and phantom beings. They enlist Owen Wilson, Danny DeVito, Tiffany Haddish, and the always wonderful LaKeith Stanfield for help.
Will Kids Actually Want to See Haunted Mansion?
Kids will definitely want to see Disney’s Haunted Mansion. It’s fun and fast and very entertaining. The film is very much like being on a ride in one of the theme parks (without the long lines, of course). You do not have to be this tall to ride this Haunted Mansion.
There are several jump scares and flashing lights. If your child is sensitive to these you might want to reconsider.
The movie is rated PG-13 for the fact it is scary-ish and also because of the theatrical effects.
Will Adults Want to See Haunted Mansion?
The movie is very entertaining for adults as well (especially for those who love the original ride). It also gets to the heart of why something is actually haunted. This movie deals with death and grieving in a way that is not horribly overwhelming for children. This movie would make a good jumping-off point for adults to talk to the younger generation about death.
Is the movie too long for kids?
The movie is only two hours and three minutes you might need a potty break.
Is Haunted Mansion Controversial?
No. The movie is fiction.
About the movie:
When single mom Gabby (Rosario Dawson from The Book of Boba Fett) and her son move into an oddly affordable New Orleans mansion, they realize they’ve gotten much more than they bargained for. Desperate for help, they contact a priest (Owen Wilson from Loki) who, in turn, enlists the aid of a widowed scientist-turned-paranormal-expert, a French Quarter psychic (Tiffany Haddish from Girls Trip), and a crotchety historian (Danny DeVito from Jumanji: The Next Level) to help exorcise the mansion.
