Sponsored post and FREEBIE by Story Surprise
There are many ways to encourage your kids to read. I have a 6 year old and a 2 year old and some nights are better than others. I AM SO EXCITED about the $50 of free books PLUS free shipping I get to give each one of you! My 6 year old daughter has 20 minutes of reading homework at night, but there are some days she would rather just read baby board books over and over again. There are some days she does amazing at reading. Her reading level is above average and she could really get into chapter books. Other days she asks me every 5 minutes if the time is up. As a teacher, I can suggest that the number one way to get your kid to want to read is to engage them. I came up with a list of ways to encourage your kids to read:
Encourage Your Kids to Read:
- Make reading FUN and UNIQUE by changing the environment! I have been known to buy headlamps, turn off all the lights and read with those and flashlights! Just turning into some fun makes it more exciting!
- Partner read with your kid. Don’t just send them to their room and start the timer for 20 minutes. Some days, you should do this and get them to read on their own. Other days you need to read with them. Take turns reading in a book so they can read along, model your fluency, speed, and tone. This will mean JUST as much to them.
- Fill in the blank reading. Try reading your kid and stopping and having them read select books. This is a way to tell them a story with words that are just above their vocabulary level to help teach and talk them through comprehension.
- Get NEW books! We just got a year of Story Surprise and when we got our first shipment BOTH of my daughters LOVED BOTH books! Packages are addressed to your kids and they get SUPER excited to get mail! Plus the subscription is ONLY $5.79-$6.99 a month and EVERY book is valued at $15-$25. I was shocked on how nice of books we were sent. My expectation was not set very high because of how affordable the price is compared to just buying books from the expensive book fair at school (which I totally still encourage because the money usually goes to help our school library).
