Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Reviews
By Myla Tosatto
In full disclosure, Movie Myla has never played the roll playing game, Dungeons and Dragons. I did help my high school boyfriend paint the mini figures for his gameplay, but I have never played myself. I have never rolled for my fate or completed a quest. That being said, I went to the new movie, Dungeons & Dragons, as a D&D newbie. And guess what? I was thoroughly impressed and thoroughly entertained. I can only imagine that game players are going to have the most excellent time at the movie house with this one!
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves finds bandits Edgin (Chris Pine) and Holga (Michelle Rodriguez) in prison after a heist goes bad. When they are “released”, they discover that Edgin’s daughter Kira (Chloe Coleman) is under the protection of one of their fellow rogues, Forge (Hugh Grant). Forge, being a conman, has taken over a realm with the help of a wizard, Sofina (Daisy Head). Unable to get Kira back, Edgin and Holga embark on a journey and enlist the help of a ne’er-do-well wizard named Simon (Justice Smith), Druid shapeshifter Doric (Sophia Lillis), and paladin Xenk (Rege-Jean Page).
Much mayhem ensues. There are sword fights, owl bears, jump scares, and a madcap dragon chase. Just be warned, this odyssey (movie) is especially long. I don’t know how long real D&D campaigns last, but at two hours and twenty minutes, Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves feels like you are battling the final boss in real time.
I’ve always enjoyed the spirit and camaraderie of Dungeons & Dragons and I think that directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein have finally brought it to the masses. This movie is great fun and I think you will enjoy every minute of it.
