How many animals in Zootopia?

If you are wondering how many animals are in Disney’s Zootopia I have the answer for you. There are over 1,000 unique animals! When drawing out thee animals there are some challenges that you could expect that the Disney Animation team came across. I met with Cory Loftis as he taught us how to draw the main character in the movie and spoke to us about the challenges of drawing these characters!

The Challenges in Creating the Citizens of Zootopia

Challenge #1: The Scale! You might have a small animal and a giraffe in one scene. How do you fit BOTH of them in the drawing to be the right proportion?

Challenge #2: The animals needed to all be different. You aren’t just making ONE bunny but lots. Plus there are lots of different families. So how do you create each family to be unique in their own way so they look alike but different?

Challenge #3: The clothes were another challenge. Each animal stood on their back legs and they wore clothes. So pants on some animals aren’t going to just look like human pants. They had to be designed for each animal and animal species.

One of things that I found fun and interesting was that these animals and species were always presented to us as “the citizens of Zootopia”.

While hanging out at Animation Studios, we were able to check out their amazing and artistic workspace, take lots of pictures, and have lunch together!  It was so much fun!  Zootopia looks absolutely adorable!
