My son and I enjoyed our opportunity to attend the Music Hall’s opening night of the Broadway tour of Disney’s Newsies. This 2012 Tony Award Winning Musical only runs in Kansas City from Tuesday, Feb 23 through Sunday, February 28. The musical retelling of the New York City newsboy strike of 1899 is a treat for the whole family, but holds a special place in the hearts of those familiar with the film version. Before the curtains ever rose, audience members were chattering about their excitement in anticipation of the musical numbers and dancing, sharing the show hashtag, #SeizeTheDay, with those around us. They did not seem to be disappointed for a moment. My son who is a singer and actor in high school performances, not only echoed the praise for the acting, singing and choreography, but also raved about his first exposure to the extensive scene movement that is so impressive at the Music Hall. Productions at the Music Hall are always a memorable way to spend an evening out.
They delivered the papers, until they made the headlines… Direct from Broadway comes Newsies, the smash-hit, crowd-pleasing new musical from Disney. Winner of the 2012 Tony Awards for Best Score and Best Choreography, Newsies has audiences and critics alike calling it “A musical worth singing about!” (The New York Times). Filled with one heart-pounding number after another, it’s a high-energy explosion of song and dance you just don’t want to miss.
Based on true events, Newsies tells the captivating story of a band of underdogs who become unlikely heroes when they stand up to the most powerful men in New York. It’s a rousing tale about fighting for what’s right…and staying true to who you are.
