Dark Phoenix Review
By Myla Tosatto
NO SPOILERS- BECAUSE I LOVE YOU
It’s a weekend in the summer so you know what that means- A NEW SUPERHERO MOVIE!!!!! This time we get the latest installment of the X-Men franchise: Dark Phoenix. After several “First Class” installments (can I call them that? I think I can call them that. I’m referring to The X-Men movies without Halle Berry and Ian McKellan- just so we’re on the same page. Which is difficult since the X-Men films do some crazy timey wimey stuff.*), we finally get to see Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) become The Phoenix. Or Dark Phoenix, to be exact, because Jean gets new powers and becomes a little psychotic.
It all starts off innocently enough. Professor Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) sends the X-Men: Jean Grey, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence), Hank McCoy (Nicholas Hoult), Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), Quicksilver (Evan Peters), and Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee) to save a space mission that has gone wrong. Everything is hunky dory until Jean gets consumed by a colorful, cosmic rush of power. She claims she’s alright but then goes a little mental bringing death and destruction around her and her loved ones. She also brings an alien race down upon them. The alien race is led by Vuk (Jessica Chastain) who would love to have the power for themselves. What’s a mutant girl to do when she can’t trust herself or her friends? Run to Magneto (Michael Fassbender) of course!
This movie is for fans of The X-Men (natch) and Pixar’s Inside Out (Jean has sooooo many emotions), people who enjoy tight shots of Sophie Turner’s face, those of us who still need to be in a timeline where Professor X is alive (why Logan, why?), for GoTers that want to see Sansa get the power she deserves and anyone who needs to bask in the glory that is Michael Fassbender and Jessica Chastain.
*I’ve seen them all and I still get confused.
The movie is now playing in theaters!
