Book Club
Review by Myla Tosatto
What would happen if Carrie, Miranda, Samantha and Charlotte grew up and formed a book club? The answer is in Bill Holderman’s newest film, Book Club. And like Sex and the City gals, you will probably identify strongly with one of the excellent female leads. Are you a Diane (Diane Keaton) -a stable woman balancing happiness and family responsibility? Or are you a Vivian (Jane Fonda), a sexy, successful business hotelier? Maybe you’re a Sharon (Candice Bergen), a no-nonsense glass half empty kind of judge. Perhaps you are a Carol (Mary Stennburgen), a sweet lady in a great and fulfilling relationship. Me, I’m totally a Sharon. Totes.*
The group gets together once a month to discuss their lives and a book. They read the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy during the course of the movie. I don’t think you need to have read the books to get enjoyment from this movie. You probably know what they are about. We ALL get the naughty gist.
It is lovely and refreshing to see mature, beautiful women living their lives to the fullest on screen . So pour a glass of Rosé, grab your best gal pals and go see Book Club. It will make you happy, I promise. The same probably cannot be said about reading the Fifty Shades trilogy.
This Book Club is both sweet and saucy, just like a good book club should be. Sign me up!
* I would be a Diane if Andy Garcia were to take me away in a Mercedes convertible. Don’t tell Mr. Movie Myla.
