Dog Movie Review
I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking that the movie Dog is about a good-looking guy and a gorgeous dog (and what’s not to love about that?). You’re also thinking that it looks like a perfect movie outing with the kids or a fabulous date night. Well. . . It may or may not be. Dog is less a cute movie about a boy and his dog and more of a movie about a man and an animal struggling with mental anguish and loss. And they struggle. A lot.
Channing Tatum stars as Staff Sergeant Jackson Briggs, a former Airborne Ranger who is trying to get back into the fight. His mind, body, commanding officers, and the Army bureaucracy say otherwise. Briggs is trapped in life-slinging sandwiches to make ends meet until his friend Riley dies and leaves his dog without a calming hand and a purpose. The beautiful dog, a Belgian Malinois, is also damaged from serving her country. Briggs is tasked with bringing the dog to his friend’s funeral where a Gold Star family is expecting the dog and Riley’s personal effects. Thus begins a road trip down the beautiful coastal highway spanning Oregon and California with stops in the larger cities. The trip is less of a madcap buddy pic and more of a journey of personal exploration for both man and beast.
This movie probably isn’t suitable for young children. Older kids, who understand the atrocities of war, might be entertained. Just a head’s up- the movie trailers show super fun hijinks and canine antics, but the movie portrays the much harsher reality of war and its aftermath.
