Argylle Review
What or Who exactly is Argylle?
That is the million-dollar question and Enza’s Bargains and Movie Myla aren’t keen on giving spoilers so you are on your own, dear movie viewer. Sorry.
Sure, sure, but come on, give us some deets. . .
Without giving too much away, Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard) is a famous spy novelist who writes about her dashing leading man, Argylle (Henry Cavill) and his sidekick Wyatt (John Cena). While on a train ride to see her mother (Cahterine O’Hara), she meets Aidan (Sam Rockwell). Elly and Aidan get caught up in a whole web of juicy espionage goodness where you can’t often tell the good guys (like Samuel L. Jackson) from the bad guys (like Bryan Cranston). This is a movie full of topsy-turvey crisscrosses.
Argylle is from Matthew Vaughn who brought us the Kingsman movies. Is it like those films?
It is! It is high on violence and style. It’s also silly in the plot. Don’t worry, though. Argylle is in on the joke and it doesn’t take itself seriously. It’s almost like a very pretty parody of a John Wick film. And with the after-credit end cap, one must assume that Argylle is in the same universe as the Kingsman flicks.
Will kids want to see it?
Of course! There is literally a cute cat* in every commercial and promotional piece for the movie. However, with all the violence**, it is not a kid-friendly movie. Not even a little bit. Argylle is better suited for a night out with the adults.
*Don’t worry, anything involving cat violence is clearly CGI. Though the cat takes some licks, it remains unharmed.
**The body count alone in this movie will make your head hurt. Yet, it is oddly rated PG-13.
About the Movie:
It is action, comedy, and excitement all in one! The movie contains a huge and talented cast too!
The greater the spy, the bigger the lie.
From the twisted mind of Matthew Vaughn (Kingsman franchise, Kick-Ass) comes Argylle, a razor-witted, reality-bending, globe-encircling spy thriller.
Bryce Dallas Howard (Jurassic World franchise) is Elly Conway, the reclusive author of a series of best-selling espionage novels, whose idea of bliss is a night at home with her computer and her cat, Alfie. But when the plots of Elly’s fictional books—which center on secret agent Argylle and his mission to unravel a global spy syndicate—begin to mirror the covert actions of a real-life spy organization, quiet evenings at home become a thing of the past.
Accompanied by Aiden (Oscar® winner Sam Rockwell), a cat-allergic spy, Elly (carrying Alfie in her backpack) races across the world to stay one step ahead of the killers as the line between Elly’s fictional world and her real one begins to blur.
The top-flight ensemble cast features Henry Cavill (The Witcher), John Cena (Fast X), Oscar® winner Ariana DeBose (West Side Story), Grammy winning pop superstar Dua Lipa (Barbie), Emmy winner and Oscar® nominee Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Emmy winner and comedy icon Catherine O’Hara (Schitt’s Creek), Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service), and the legendary Samuel L. Jackson. Alfie is played by Chip, the real-life cat of supermodel Claudia Vaughn (née Schiffer).
Argylle is directed and produced by Matthew Vaughn, from a screenplay by Jason Fuchs (Wonder Woman). The film is produced by Matthew Vaughn, Adam Bohling (Kingsman franchise), Jason Fuchs, and David Reid (Kingsman franchise). The executive producers are Adam Fishbach, Zygi Kamasa, Carlos Peres and Claudia Vaughn.
Apple Original Films presents, in association with MARV, a Cloudy production. Argylle is distributed by Universal Pictures.
