You may be asking the same question, “Is the Barbie Movie Appropriate for Families?” I have now seen it and will I take my youngest? Nope, but when it comes out on streaming, I will totally let her watch it (she will be 10 at that point).
Is the Barbie Movie Appropriate for Families?
What is the Barbie movie rated?
The Barbie movie is rated PG-13 because there is suggestive language and some bad words. After seeing the movie, I would let my almost 10-year-old watch it. The adult jokes will go over her head.
Also, I have an entire list of Barbie Quotes from the movie and you can see that some of them are iffy, but in context, it most likely will go over the little kids’ heads.
What are the main themes of Barbie?
There are a few themes in the movie. The main theme is that Barbie Land and the Real World won’t be fair and equal for women or men until both of them are fair. Ken is just a secondary character to Barbie in Barbie World and when Barbie visits the Real World she finds out that women aren’t as equal.
The movie is very Pro-Women and allows women to know that they can hold power and also be a mother and loving.
Is it too long for younger children?
If you are thinking of taking your family to the movie know that it is 1 hour and 54 minutes long. Your kids will probably need at least one potty break.
Are there any explicit content or scenes that may not be suitable for my family?
There are some cuss words and some adult-content jokes but I believe that all those jokes would go over my daughters’ heads. I feel as though this family is safe for kids 10 and older.
Does the movie have any controversial or sensitive themes?
I was prepared to go into this movie thinking there were going to be a lot of controversial topics, I thought there would be a transgender Barbie, and I thought there were going to be some LGBTQ+ references that would make some feel uncomfortable.
I thought that the theme was very pro-women, which is in line with the brand. They do make fun of Ken and anti-Ken throughout the movie but I also think that goes in line with the brand. I had a LOT of Barbies growing up and very few Ken. This is part of the joke of the movie. The Kens are very Kenish and seem to have a buddy friendship with each other.
There are actors/actresses who are LGBTQ+ in the movie but the movie isn’t about them and they are either playing Ken or Barbie and nobody would know the difference. It was never addressed in the movie. If you don’t know the actors and their sexual orientation, you still won’t know by the end of the movie.
Barbie Movie Recap?
To live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in a perfect place. Unless you have a full-on existential crisis. Or you’re a Ken. Barbie starts becoming weird when her owner in the real world is struggling. She has to go back to the human world to help her owner but everything gets flipped and turned upside down.
Overall, the movie is funny. I loved the nostalgia of Barbie. I also liked the fact that it says women can be anything. I am not sure little boys will love this movie as much as little girls will.
The movie is a comedy so they didn’t tug at my heartstrings very much, but I felt a tiny tug when I see the mother watching her daughter grow up.
The movie’s aesthetics and set design are amazing. Plus, dressing up to see this movie is so much fun. So many movie theaters have the Barbie box prop which is so much fun for photos!

COMEDY 100%! The entire movie felt like a 2 hour SNL skit!
