Champions Review
By Myla Tosatto
“You’ve got to learn to build relationships, man.”- Ernie Hudson’s Phil says to Woody Harrelson’s character, Marcus towards the beginning of the new movie Champions. That, in a nutshell, is what Champions is all about. Marcus has to learn to trust other people to become a better person and reach his goals. His love interest, Alex (Katlin Olson), must come to grips with her dependent relationship with her brother Johnny (Kevin Iannicci). This movie about Special Olympic Athletes is about sports, of course, but it’s really about relationships. What’s a team if not a whole bunch of relationships?
This movie is the product of Bobby Farrelly, one-half of the brothers who brought us such films as All About Mary and Dumb and Dumber. So, sure, expect some gross-out humor, but also expect some heart. Lots and lots of heart. And pretty much all the humor and all of the heart comes from ‘The Friends’, a Special Olympics Championship caliber team. The team consists of Cosentino (Madison Tevlin), Darius (Joshua Felder), Cody (Ahston Gunning), Craig (Matthew Von Der Ahe), Blair (Tom Sinclair), Benny (James Day Keith), Arthur (Alex Hintz), Marlon (Casey Metcalfe), and Showtime (Bradley Edens). The team members are shown doing all the usual practicing, team building, and trash talking as well as juggling home lives, love lives, hobbies, morals, and jobs. Farrelly does a wonderful job of making The Friends the focus of Champions. Sure, Woody Harrelson, Kaitlin Olson, Ernie Hudson, and Cheech Marin are bigger names, but The Friends’ stars shine brighter.
There are some adult situations (which makes the movie PG-13), but middle schoolers on up will want to see the movie. It’s a sports movie culminating in a championship game. Who doesn’t want to see that?

This sounds like an entertaining movie.
