Jordan Peele’s Nope Movie Review
What do aliens, horses, movies, chimps*, Monopoly pieces, and Oprah have in common? I’m not 100% sure, but Jordan Peele knows.
That’s right, the horror/comedy genius is back with a new movie, Nope. Peele wrote and directed this movie following his hits Get Out and Us. Like his previous films, Nope twists and turns and never lets up with action and intensity.
It also boasts great performances from its lead actors. Unlike its predecessors, Nope is pure science fiction. It is the perfect summer movie. It would be awesome to see it at the drive-in with a big bag of popcorn and Sour Patch Kids.
Peele’s favorite leading man, Daniel Kaluuya, is back as OJ Haywood, a very serious man who trains horses for show business. His slacker sister, Emerald (Keke Palmer) is “helping” on the ranch following their father’s (Keith David) death.
Because of assumed UFO sightings, Emerald enlists Angel Torres (Brandon Perea) for his technology knowledge to help get a shot of the UFO, and therefore become rich.
Also factoring into Nope is former child star/current amusement park proprietor Ricky Park (Steven Yeun). Their stories wind throughout the movie.
The movie isn’t nearly as scary or gory as Peele’s other works, though it is rated R. Keep that in mind when you are thinking about bringing the kids.
It is more of Close Encounters of the Third Kind and less of an Alien horror fest. There are some troubling images, to be sure. Especially concerning flashbacks to Ricky Park’s youth.
*I still can’t figure out the chimp thing. I keep thinking about it and nothing is forthcoming. If anyone can explain it to me, please do so in the comments. I’m afraid Movie Myla may not sleep until I figure out the addition of the chimp!

Nope, which co-stars Michael Wincott (Hitchcock, Westworld) and Brandon Perea (The OA, American Insurrection), is written and directed by Jordan Peele and is produced by Ian Cooper (Us, Candyman) and Jordan Peele for Monkeypaw Productions. The film will be released by Universal Pictures worldwide.
