That’s what Movie Myla is singing to herself as she can hardly contain the excitement about Steven Spielberg’s new adaptation of West Side Story. This is THE movie of 2021. Maybe the movie of the decade.
The “rumble” for this year’s Academy Awards isn’t going to be a fair fight now that West Side Story has entered the running. The musical is heavily armed with incredible performances, a screenplay by Tony Kushner (based off the stage book by Arthur Laurents), words and music by Stephen Soudheim and Leonard Bernstein (not that they can win the award, they just need to be mentioned!!), and direction from Steven Spielberg.
Costumes, sets, cinematography, and hair and makeup are going to clean up the awards as well. And even though there isn’t an Oscar for choreography, I think the Academy should award Justin Peck with one just because the dancing is so intricate and vivacious! Go home to every other movie of 2021! You are officially on West Side Story’s turf and you need to step off.
In case you don’t know the story of West Side Story (or Romeo and Juliet, for that matter), it revolves around Tony (Ansel Elgort) and Maria (Rachel Zegler). They meet and fall in love. The problem is- they come from different warring factions of New Yorkers in the 1950’s.
Tony is a member of the Jets, led by Riff (Mike Faist), and Maria is the sister of the leader of the Sharks, Bernardo (David Alvarez). Ariana DeBose plays the iconic role of Anita (with the best lines and costumes). The rivalry is deep and strong but luckily everyone involved can sing and dance better than anyone else in the world. And sure, the material is over 60 years old, but this version is timeless and topical. We are literally still struggling with the class warfare and immigration issues portrayed in this film in this country.
This movie is perfection. There are two outstanding things that just push this movie over the top: the use of untranslated Spanish throughout it and the casting of the 1961 Anita, Rita Moreno. Kudos to Spielberg for those inspired choices!
This movie absolutely, positively MUST be seen at the movie theater. The colors and excitement and heartache deserve the big screen. If you don’t see a gang the size of a building ballet-ing through New York did you even see West Side Story? No. You did not.
