How much money do teachers spend on their classrooms?
It is actually hard for me to think of how much I spend on my classroom since I usually do it in pieces and try to collect as much as I can each year. Some teachers spend a lot more money on their classrooms than others. Some of the things that I have purchased for my classroom include a Cricut Machine, Student Breakfast Bars and Snacks, Stickers, Bulletin Board Paper and Decor, lamps, rugs, microwave, coffee maker, female hygiene products, cardstock, vinyl, and so much more! I know some teachers spend hundreds and hundreds on their classrooms just to help create some equity in their room for students who might not have the same resources as others.
I don’t only spend money to help with resources, but a classroom environment is very important along with creating relationships with students. I believe parents understand that a little bit more after Covid. For a minute teachers became superheroes when parents had to manage only two kids without even having to provide lessons, grading, and more.
Getting help on resources is tough. I shared an Amazon wish list on a couple of social media sites this year and last year. This year nobody was able to help out and last year I had two people purchase off my list out of the 10 items I had listed. I eventually purchased them once my budget opened up. Here is some research that Savings.com conducted:
- The average amount teachers spend without getting reimbursed is $511. One in four teachers spends over $750 on supplies.
- A quarter of teachers say their schools don’t provide any funds at all for classroom supplies.
- Only 25 percent of students are sent to school with all or most of what’s requested on back-to-school supply lists given to their parents.
