The Burnt Orange Heresy
Review by Myla Tosatto
In The Burnt Orange Heresy: Italy is beautiful, the actors are beautiful, the clothes are beautiful, the sets are beautiful, the words that are spoken are beautiful. But the beauty is all on the surface. In the movie, based on the book by Charles Willeford, we get to see to see the slimy underneath of the art world.
James Figueras (Claes Bang) is a talented and beguiling art critic looking for his next break. Berenice Hollis (Elizabeth Debicki), is a vacationing American who is instantly drawn to James. They are summoned to the estate of wealthy art collector Joseph Cassidy (Mick Jagger) in hopes of a job for broke James. Cassidy introduces James to a famous reclusive artist, Jerome Debney (Donald Sutherland). Their meeting sparks many events that will shape the lives of the four characters forever.
The movie is a dark, deep slow burn with many, many twists and turns. But what is the biggest twist of all in The Burnt Orange Heresy? What a delight Mick Jagger is as the slick benefactor to James and Debney. Obviously, Jagger is full of charismatic charm but he turns it up here with a very nasty edge. I would also like to mention another cast member of The Burnt Orange Heresy: The Flies. Never have flies played such an important role in a movie before. I mean, besides The Amityville Horror, Call Me by Your Name, and The Fly, of course. They really should have gotten fifth billing. I can only imagine the insect union isn’t that strong.
