Troop Zero Review – A movie with a lot of heart!

When folks say a movie “has a lot of heart,” I think about my grandmother saying, “Bless her heart, but…” and we all know what comes after the “but” negates what came before. However, when I say that Troop Zero “has a lot of heart” I mean it sincerely without its cliched negative connotations. If you have seen the movie we would love to hear your Troop Zero review.

Troop Zero Review

Troop Zero, set in 1977 Georgia, is a story of perfectly misfit young people trying to make their way and let us know they are here as they struggle through the milieu of growing up. Christmas (McKenna Grace), a barley middle-school-aged girl pondering the potentials of the Universe, sets out to communicate with life outside of planet Earth. She learns she can do just that if she wins the Birdie Jamboree, securing the opportunity to have her voice heard, to communicate with other life forms on NASA’s Golden Record. However, Christmas is not a Birdie, and is far from Birdie material.

To the unbridled dislike of Crystal Massey (Allison Janney), Rayleen (Viola Davis), the assistant to Christmas’s forever losing lawyer father, Ramsey Flint (Jim Gagfigan), decides to be the Troop Momma for Christmas and her misfit gaggle of rebels. In beginning their misadventure, the now legitimate Troop Zero, must earn a badge each in order to enter the Birdie Jamboree if they hope to make their indelible mark on history through the Golden Record.

Troop Zero’s journey to the Jamboree will develop and test friendships, make them believe in their own power, and leave them feeling much less alone in the expanse of the Universe.

Troop Zero, with a subtle enough subversive tone, ultimately permits young people and adults to know that our genuine natures are good enough and that we deserve to be in relationship with others. A lovely message for all of us to be reminded of, over and over again.

A tiny Georgia town in 1977, a motherless girl dreams of life beyond the confines of her trailer-park home in Troop Zero. When her quest for connection leads her to reach for the stars in a competition to be included on NASA’s landmark Golden Record, it becomes clear she will have to depend on some new friends to take her the last mile.

Every night, Christmas Flint (McKenna Grace) sits under a starry sky with a flashlight, signaling to extraterrestrial visitors that never arrive. Sensitive, imaginative and deeply lonely, Christmas and her equally eccentric best friend Joseph are the ultimate misfits in their rural hometown of Wiggle, Georgia. When Christmas learns that the winners of the annual space for posterity, her mission in life becomes to join the Scouts and win Jamboree.

When she is blackballed by the snobbish local Birdie Scout troop and their uptight leader Miss Massey (Allison Janney), Christmas rallies a group of elementary-school outliers to start their own chapter. With grudging help from her dad’s irascible office manager, Miss Rayleen (Viola Davis), Christmas and her crew have to bypass every roadblock Miss Massey can find in the fine print of the Birdie bylaws in order to reach the Jamboree and their chance at immortality. From Christmas’ solitary late-night vigils to a final show-stopping musical performance, Troop Zero is an endearing and magical tale set against a backdrop of beloved hits of the ‘70s, as Christmas forges friendships that will change her life and help her find a real family.
