We were so excited to send several Enza’s Bargains readers and a guest to an early reception to the Little Woman Advance Screening in Kansas City! Besides that we sent our writer Myla Tosatto to write and share her Little Women Review with all of you! Please read it below!

Little Women Review

Movie Myla has a VERY HIGH (perhaps the highest) bar for the telling of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women. Sure, you can remake and remake and remake i, but if it isn’t going to live up to the original 1868 novel or the second movie version, why do it? Alcott’s story is perfect and 1949’s June Allyson as Jo, Margaret O’Brien (Beth), Elizabeth Taylor (Amy), and Janet Leigh (Meg) are sublime. But then, like a holiday miracle, something incredible happens. A classic can be remade and it can be one of the best movies in 2019 (one of the best in the decade, actually). Coming off her divine Lady Bird, Greta Gertwig has written and directed Little Women and made the 150 year old story new and fresh. She didn’t have to employ stunt casting or set it in modern times or use any gimmicks (besides flash backs) to remain true to the beloved novel.

Gertwig once again casts Saorise Ronan (why wouldn’t she after the magic they made in Lady Bird?). I do not have enough praise to lay on Ms. Ronan. Transcendent? Divine? Perfect? Yes, I will go with perfect. Her Jo is passion and empathy and exasperation and impatience and strength all rolled up in the best role model that a child can have. She lends weight to her cinema sisters Meg (Emma Watson), Amy (Florence Pugh*), and Beth (Eliza Scanlen). The relationships are fully fleshed out and make you realize that not much has changed where siblings are concerned since 1886. Laura Dern, Timothee Chalamet, Bob Odenkirk, James Norton, Meryl Streep and Chris Cooper round out the rest of the cast but the movie truly belongs to our Little Women.

Please, please, please go see this movie. And take your kids and their friends. And your friends. Just go see it. You will thank me. I like to be thanked.

* I have never seen Ms. Pugh in a movie but I am now a huge fan. Oh, Amy, you deserve someone like her to play you. I’m glad you found each other.
