Bohemian Rhapsody
Review by Myla Tosatto
Freddie Mercury famously sang, “Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?” in the song Bohemian Rhapsody. In the new film of the same name, you will be asking the same questions about Rami Malek’s incredible performance of the world’s greatest rock singer (Don’t @ me- it’s non-negotiable. Freddie Mercury was the greatest rock singer ever. EVER.).
Mercury was larger than life and remains that way even in death. In Bryan Singer’s film, we learn Mercury’s story as well as the one of his band mates: Brian May (Gwilym Lee), John Deacon (Joseph Mazzello), and Roger Taylor (Ben Hardy). They formed an awesome band and an awesome family. The story also explores the relationship between Freddie and the love of his life, Mary Austin (Lucy Boynton) and that of the band’s business representatives John Reid (Aidan Gillen) and Jim Beach (Tom Hollander). Did you know that Queen had their very own Yoko Ono? I did not! But lo and behold, Paul Prenter (Allen Leech) played that role!
I would recommend this to any music or history lover. It plays like a biopic, but with many humorous bits thrown in. If Queen hadn’t become a famous rock group, they could have been a comedy troop. There is sadness, too. We know how the story ends, but it doesn’t dwell on it.
This movie is also for cat lovers. Don’t ask. Just go see Bohemian Rhapsody. It’s “Killer Queen.”
Bohemian Rhapsody is NOW playing in theaters!
