If I had a Magic Eight Ball (remember that toy from our childhoods?) I wouldn’t have to ask it if you will like this movie. I’m pretty sure it would say, “It is decidedly so.” And even though Jack Black’s Jonathan Barnavelt doesn’t think that Magic Eight Balls contain real magic, his nephew Lewis (Owen Vaccaro) does. The House with a Clock in Its Walls is about real magicians’ magic and the magic that is inside of us. Jonathan Barnavelt knows a lot about magic. A LOT. But he doesn’t know why there is a ticking noise coming from the walls in his house or how to raise his newly orphaned nephew. Luckily, his best friend Mrs. Zimmerman (Cate Blanchett) is around to help him with both. Jonathan, Lewis, and Mrs. Zimmerman navigate magic, friendship and ultimately family. Along the way they must deal with the evil that is Isaac Izard (Kyle MacLachlan) and his wife Selena (Renee Elise Goldsberry).
The movie is based on the beloved 1973 novel of the same name by John Bellairs. The screenplay by Eric Kripke stays true to the original heart of the story but it expands it charmingly to make an entertaining 1 hour and 45 minutes. The movie is gorgeous. The sets and costumes are breathtakingly beautiful. It is easy just to sit back and get lost in the 1950’s scenery.
Just in time for Halloween and all things creepy, comes The House with a Clock in Its Walls directed by Eli Roth. This movie has just the right amount of ‘scary’ for the young ones. Adults will find it entertaining as well.
