Have you even wondered what a wildly popular bestseller would look like if it exploded onto a movie screen? Wonder no longer, friends. We have our answer in Jon M. Chu’s adaptation of Kevin Kwan’s Crazy Rich Asians. The delightfully light book is now a delightfully light rom com for you to enjoy!

This movie is made for every person that has ever book clubbed (at least those that do the fiction genre). It is for the lover of romance, the lover of travel, and the lover of gorgeous clothes. It’s also for all of us who have been waiting for the talented Constance Wu (Fresh Off the Boat) to headline a movie.

Wu stars as Rachel Chu, an NYU professor that falls for Nick Young (Henry Golding). This seems pretty straightforward until Rachel finds out that the charming and handsome Nick is also of THAT Young family- the Young family that is dripping in money. We find this out right along with her when the happy couple goes to Singapore for the wedding of the year of Colin Khoo (Chris Pang) and Araminta Lee (Sonoya Mizuno). Tied up in all of the wedding shenanigans is also the meeting of the family: Beautiful Matriarch Eleanor (Michelle Yeoh), glamorous Astrid (Gemma Chan), and various other members of Nick’s family that are basically sent to either help or hinder Rachel. Rachel’s best friend Goh Peik Lin (the always delightful Awkwafina) and her family of crazy characters are also there to help Rachel along.

Why does Rachel need so much help? Who is out to get her? Well, that is pretty much the plot of the movie, so I will not be giving that away. We do know by the title that the people involved are crazy rich so you know what their main motivator is here. Luckily, Rachel and Nick are motivated by love (because we could all use a love story about now).

This movie is gorgeous and it made me want to immediately book a flight to Singapore. Or join a book club. Just know that Kevin Kwan has two more books in this series so we may be looking at more adaptations. I hope so! Until then, I am off to read book two!
