Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
Review by Clever Girl (Myla Tosatto)
Put on your hiking boots (or heels if you are Bryce Dallas Howard’s Claire) and your jackets that hold Velociraptor treats, people! We are back in Jurassic Park! And as Owen (Chris Pratt) says, RUN!!!!
Claire and Owen are back at Isla Nebula in order to save as many of the engineered dinosaurs as they can from an active volcano. As the volcano erupts, so does the drama. They are helped and hindered by Jurassic Park newbies Zia Rodriguez (Daniella Pineda), Franklin Webb (Justice Smith), and Ken Wheatley (Ted Levine). Meanwhile, Eli Mills (Rafe Spall) is preparing for the dinosaurs at the American estate of Benjamin Lockwood (James Cromwell) and his granddaughter, Maisie (Isabella Sermon). It doesn’t take long for the two stories to viciously collide. This post contains affiliate/commission links.
Director J.A. Boyona’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is a homage to the previous four Jurassic Park movies. Though the setting is different, viewers will feel very comfortable at this new Park. This movie becomes a bit of a Jurassic Park all-star tale. I mean, not only do we get Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) and Blue (the indomitable raptor), we get “hero” dinosaurs taking out “bad guy” dinosaurs.
The tributes don’t stop there. There are movie shout outs all over the place. One of the greatest action scenes is when Owen is taking on what looks like a Darth Maul wannabe (“lightsaber” and all) while a Stygimoloch runs havoc in the background. The water dinosaur owes its posing to Jaws. The T-Rex is growling at either Alex from Madagascar or Simba. And I’m not sure, but it almost looks like Blue is ready to terrorize E.T.’s neighborhood with a Poltergeist of her own.
Kids are most certainly going to want to see this movie. The dinosaurs are scary and lifelike and they eat people (if you think that is a spoiler- where have you been for the last 25 years?). A lot of the truly horrific stuff is just off camera or appears smaller in the background. Kids will be saddened by what actually happens after the volcano at Jurassic Park. I certainly was. They will enjoy the child protagonist, Maisie. She is strong and smart and as formidable as any of the dinosaurs.
P.S. Is it just me or do you root for the dinosaurs too? I always have and I always will. Here’s to you, Jurassic World 3! Chomp chomp, Blue, chomp chomp.
