In this lesson plan, the best “hook” that you are going to have to teach your kids about the Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) is going to be to show them the beautiful movie COCO. To keep students engaged I created an optional worksheet that they can fill out with general comprehension questions from the film. Pause the movie throughout viewing it to talk about it.

Coco Snacks and Viewing Party:
Make watching the movie fun! Get popcorn and themed Coco items you or your student might own to bring to class that day! Although, we want this movie to be educational we also want it to be meaningful! I don’t have pictures of my class watching the movie yet, but I do have pictures of my kids!
Shoebox Altars:
Ask students to bring in a shoebox and picture of someone they know who is no longer living. To make this less of an emotional experience students can research famous people to create their alter.
Family Tree:
During the movie, Miguel talks about who parents are who. He creates a family tree during the movie. hee if your kids can create their own family tree. You can share Miguel’s family tree.

Make a guitar:
