Oh my gosh this two acting combo with Anthony Gonzalez and Alanna Ubach is amazing! I will never forget this interview with these two ever!
It started with some major excitement about my Miguel doll! Alanna Ubach came into the room and I carried my Disney Miguel Doll that I had to the interview and he was sitting on my backpack. She yelled…what is THAT?! She ran to my Miguel, picked him up and started rocking him like a little baby. She wanted to know why she didn’t have one yet and was totally in love with him.
Then, in the middle of the interview we asked Miguel to sing and those vocals are amazing! Be sure to check out the video on my interview highlights below!
Then a few minutes into the interview, we had both of them singing and making the Mexican sound they make that is really loud in songs that reminds me of a whistle. We had Anthony Gonzalez belting out his song and it was so beautiful that I got goose bumps being in the same rooms as him.
About Miguel: Played by Anthony Gonzalez:
Miguel, an aspiring singer and self- taught guitarist who dreams of following in the footsteps of his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz. “Miguel and I are alike in many different ways,” says Gonzalez. “We both are 12 years old, we both love our family, and we both love music. I relate to Miguel a lot because we are both very determined and perseverant, we both share the passion for music, and we never give up.”
About Mama Imelda: Played by Alanna Ubach:
Miguel’s great-great-grandmother, is the matriarch of the Rivera family and the founder of their successful shoemaking business. Miguel meets Mamá Imelda in the Land of the Dead and discovers she really does not share his passion for music. “Imelda is the source of the family’s ban on music,” says Unkrich. “Long ago, she was 20 married to a musician, but she found that he had very different priorities in life. She wanted to raise a family, but he couldn’t let go of his love of music.”
Alanna Ubach, who provides the voice of Mamá Imelda, says that her experience as a young person pursuing a career in the arts is different from Miguel’s in the movie. “Following one’s dreams resonates with me and my upbringing,” she says. “My mother and father were passionate advocates of the arts, which had a profound influence on me and my decision to act professionally.”
The interview itself had us talking about family, tradition, music, growing up, their characters and so much more! After the interview, Miguel’s mom just gathered us around and thanked us bloggers for supporting her sun and the movie. This is the first time I have ever had such a grateful and humble mother take the time to just stop and take the time to want to talk to us too.
Here are some of the highlights from our interview:
Interview with Anthony Gonzalez and Alanna Ubach
About playing Miguel:
Anthony Gonzalez: The first time I saw Miguel. I was actually very surprised, like, “Oh, we look alike,” yeah. Yeah. And just to be a part of a Disney-Pixar movie is just a dream of mine. Because I have been really watching these movies since very little. And to be in one right now is just amazing.
About Alanna learning to sing (she did sing for us too):
Alanna Ubach: My mother. My mother used to sing it to me. Mi mama es de Sinaloa Mi papa de Puerto Rico (my mom is from Sinaloa {Mexico} my dad is from Puerto Rico). And, both of them, actually, knew that song. And it’s about trying to coax a burrito, a little donkey, to get up the hill. It’s like, “Come on little donkey, get up the hill, so you can have your corn.” That’s what it’s about. It’s ridiculous.
Alanna sharing about her new son:
Alanna Ubach: Oh. How would I like him to remember me? That I sang him funny, silly little songs, and that I loved him with my very soul. He breaks my heart every single day. He gets a hammer to my heart and pounds on it, and then hands it back to me, and then it takes me 23 hours to put it back together all over again, and then the following day he does the same thing. He’s my life. He really is my life. And I hope he remembers me as someone who — that he was my life.
Antony on celebrating the Day of the Dead:
Anthony Gonzalez: Yes. I do celebrate the Day of the Dead. The time I actually started celebrating was when my grandfather passed away. He was very special to me, because he was always there for me, and he would just be so funny, and he was always there to support me in what I loved to do, which was sing. And, yeah. So starting when I was six year old, he passed away. I would love to celebrate the Day of the Dead, because it was a day where I could be with him, and connect with him once again, and that’s why I loved this joyful celebration. And I can’t believe I’m part of a movie that celebrates and shows this wonderful celebration.
The important of making the movie:
Alanna Ubach: It was so important for Pixar to make this movie, because, to me, it really does respect the one important quality that Latin and Latin Americans have, and that is the importance of family.
