Wonder Woman
Review by Myla Tosatto
You want to know the neat thing about the Wonder Woman movie? That it’s women-centric? Yes. That it has great action sequences where the women outmaneuver and outsmart the men? Well, sure. That it’s directed by a woman? Oh my goodness, yes. That it passes the Bechdel Test? Heck yea! But you know what else? It’s a superhero origin story crossed with a spy thriller crossed with a war spectacular. Tinker Tailor Lasso Spy? Full Metal Headband? No. WONDER WOMAN! (Be sure to also check out our Wonder Woman Quotes list!)
We meet Wonder Woman (the magnetic Gal Gadot) as a child being raised by her queen mother Hippolyta (Connie Nielson), warrior aunt Antiope (Robin Wright) and the rest of her Amazon clan. While learning and training, she is isolated until Captain Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) literally falls into her world. This sets off the adventure of Wonder Woman and Captain Trevor trying to end World War I. Though they have Etta (Lucy Davis), Charlie (Ewen Bremner), The Chief (Eugene Brave Rock), Sameer (Said Taghmaoui) and Sir Patrick Morgan (David Thewlis) seemingly on their side, they must face the evil Dr. Poison (Elena Anaya) and Ludendorff (Danny Huston).
Can the kids see it? Keep in mind that the death toll is high. This is fine when it’s faceless Nazis but some kids might be upset when it’s Amazons and innocent villagers. War is not glorified in this movie. It is shown for what it is: full of evil, destruction and loss. What is does show is the helplessness of it and the want to do something to end it. That’s not to say that the movie isn’t fun. Because it is. It is much lighter than the recent slate of DC fare (excluding Suicide Squad, of course). No dark, brooding, mumbling superheroes here. Just powerful, refreshing, smart, capable, caring, compassionate Wonder Woman!
Wonder Woman is NOW playing in theaters everywhere!
Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers…and her true destiny.
