The Boss Baby

Years from now, people will be trotting out The Boss Baby to help little kids understand about becoming big siblings. It works REALLY well on that level. It is, at its core, a movie about a boy with an overactive imagination, Tim (Milles Christopher Bakshi and Tobey Maguire), and his new walking, talking and memo making baby brother, The Boss Baby (Alec Baldwin). The movie starts out with Tim and his loving parents (Lisa Kudrow and Jimmy Kimmel) being the perfect family. They sing and tell stories and have HUGE fantasies shown through beautifully rendered retro animation. Then the baby comes along and turns the whole household upside down. What we learn though, is that the baby isn’t even really a baby. He is a product of a bureaucratic management company sent out to save the fate of babies everywhere. This plot involves a cabal of talking babies, puppies and a villain named Francis Francis (Steve Buscemi). Did I mention that our protagonist has a very overactive imagination?

It is a very sweet movie that is easy for a grown up to enjoy as well as a little one. There are a ton of jokes about office place occurrences that might go over the heads of kids, but it moves quickly enough that they won’t get restless. The movie mostly runs on scatological humor, so the kids should get a big kick out of that. If they start running around saying, “poop, doody”, don’t blame me. Blame Alec Baldwin.

The best part of the movie? Hearing Lisa Kudrow sing The Beatle’s “Blackbird”. Sure, it’s no “Smelly Cat,” but it will put a smile on your face.

A suit-wearing briefcase-carrying baby pairs up with his seven-year old brother to stop the dastardly plot of the CEO of Puppy Co.
