The Zookeeper’s Wife Review – A real life hero

I am happy and humbled to share The Zookeeper’s Wife Review that I screened while in New York for the press junket. I hope you were able to read my interview, I recently posted. The Zookeepers Wife is a beautiful and heart wrenching story of our history that teaches about hope and heroism. A hero can save lives and help to improve the quality of life for others! The movie is intended for a mature audience with a tender heart! The movie is based on a true story about Antonina Żabińska and her husband, Dr. Jan Żabiński. They both ran the Warsaw Zoo in Poland in 1939. Poland was being attacked by Germans and they joined the resilience to save hundreds of lives by hiding them in their zoo. The movie tells the story in such a beautiful way. It is so hard to use that word beautiful when you realize how ignorant humans were being in that time period. It was what her and her husband did to save lives and put their family at risk that made me feel hope and love.

While watching the film, I found myself deep into the story and there were parts that make the audience feel very uncomfortable and there were parts that made you love the heroic actions of our history.

If you love learning about history this story is very well written. Besides learning about WW2 and the story of the Żabiński’s, you learn about animals. There are so parallels to the animals in the story, the relationships, the healing process, and the trust that you see with the zoo animals and with Antonina.

The real-life story of one working wife and mother who became a hero to hundreds during World War II. In 1939 Poland, Antonina Żabińska (portrayed by two-time Academy Award nominee Jessica Chastain) and her husband, Dr. Jan Żabiński (Johan Heldenbergh of “The Broken Circle Breakdown”), have the Warsaw Zoo flourishing under his stewardship and her care. When their country is invaded by the Nazis, Jan and Antonina are stunned – and forced to report to the Reich’s newly appointed chief zoologist, Lutz Heck (Daniel Brühl of “Captain America: Civil War”). To fight back on their own terms, Antonina and Jan covertly begin working with the Resistance – and put into action plans to save lives out of what has become the Warsaw Ghetto, with Antonina putting herself and even her children at great risk.
