Julieta Movie Review
From the mind of director Pedro Almodóvar (Talk to Her, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, and Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!), comes his latest movie exalting women, Julieta. Like most of his previous works, Julieta focuses on women. This time it centers on the life, loss, grief, and guilt of Julieta and her daughter, Atina (played by Priscilla Delgado and Blanca Parés ). Adrina Ugarte plays the younger Julieta while Emma Suárez plays the elder Julieta who narrates the story to Atina through a journal-type letter. The story is told through memories and flashbacks as Julieta floats through the two actresses. The way Almodóvar reveals the final Julieta is quite cunning. Rounding out the cast is Daniel Grao as Xoan, Imma Cuesta as Ava, Dario Grandinetti as Lorenzo, Michelle Jenner as adult Beatriz, Sara Jiménez as younger Beatriz, and the sassy Rossy de Palma as Marian.
The movie is in its original Spanish and has English subtitles. Please don’t let this deter you. It is a quiet, but poignant movie. Pedro Almodóvar used three short stories found in Alice Munro’s collection Runaway to write this movie. I would advise the film for fans of Munro and Almodóvar. It would be especially great to get your reading group together to see this movie after reading the book. Perhaps while enjoying a glass of red wine… This movie would also be great for those of us practicing our Spanish or hoping to regain what we lost since college and high school. Now where is that red wine I was talking about?
