Sure it’s Naughty, But It’s Also Nice
Bad Santa 2
Myla Tosatto
(Not for the kids…at all.)
I am one of those people who believe you can put Kathy Bates down into any acting situation and she will knock your socks off. Well, hold on to your hosiery while watching Bad Santa 2 because they will be blown right off your feet! That woman can do anything! In Bad Santa 2, Kathy Bates plays Sunny Sokes, mother to our Bad Santa, Willie Sokes (Billy Bob Thornton). She is just as despicable as he is and that makes it all the more fun! Returning cast members Tony Cox as Markus Skidmore and Brett Kelly as Thurman Merman round out the cast of wretched souls.
Within all the crudeness and rudeness and horrible acts of depravity, rests a Christmas movie with a big heart just like its predecessor Bad Santa. Sometimes it’s easy to forget the true meaning of Christmas, but Thurman Merman always recalls it. He may not remember to bring his winter coat to Chicago in December, but he remembers what is important, family. He ranks right up there with Linus from a Charlie Brown Christmas as the heart of this production. But unlike a Charlie Brown Christmas, children should never, ever see Bad Santa 2. Ever. Period.
If you are an adult that enjoyed the first one, by all means see it. And laugh and cringe and laugh some more. If you haven’t seen the original, I recommend it. Maybe the more delicate eared folks might want to forgo it, but the rest will laugh heartily. Like the sequel to this “raunch”fest, you can still get that “ah” Christmas feeling that a good Christmas movie can give you.
