I was invited to interview Director Scott Derrickson for Marvel’s Doctor Strange in LA. Expenses were covered by Marvel/Disney/ABC. This interview and experience was quite amazing!
Scott Derrickson did an amazing job as director of the new Marvel’s Doctor Strange movie. He is a total comic geek! What I learned most about interviewing him was how dedicated and such a hard worker he is and was for this film!
He said that he had about 8 meetings with Marvel when he was trying to get to direct this movie! During his 2nd meeting he had written a 12 page fighting-scene to share that did end up being in the movie!
Doctor Strange was his favorite comic growing up! So you can tell his passion for this movie was great!
Marvel’s Doctor Strange Director Scott Derrickson Interview
About CHOOSING a FEMALE for “The Ancient One”! “The first reason was because I was trying to find ways, creative ways, and positive ways, to escape the racial stereotypes from the original comics…the Ancient One, and Wong, those two characters were, were pretty offensive racial stereotypes, by modern standards. Wong’s character, I was able to completely reinvent. ” Scott when on by explaining that every time he imagined that role…and then imagined it with an Asian woman that he, “couldn’t get away from the stereotype of the Dragon Lady. If you know anything about American cinema and the portrayal of the Dragon Lady…” Scott also mentioned that he wrote the story and the party FOR Tilda without her knowing it!
Did you write the part for anyone else who was casted in the film? “The five lead roles…this is very rare, but the five lead roles, we got our first choice on every one of them. That almost nev– I don’t think that’s ever happened for me, you know, where, where our first choice for each role, we just were able to get. It usually doesn’t happen, for no other reason, because of availability. “
About his kids. Scott talked about how his boys love Marvel and that he wanted to make a movie that impressed them but also made an impression!
About working on this film. Scott explained that Doctor Strange is his favorite Marvel comic. He wanted to work so bad on this film that during his second meeting that he wrote already 12 pages of a scene! He wanted to be able to picture the story and hold the true essence of the comic.
The interview went on talking about some favorite scenes and more information about “The Ancient One” and Doctor Strange’s personality. We also talked about the main takeaway from the movie. Since I don’t want to give you any spoilers be sure to see the movie in theaters soon!

It is always cool to hear about all of the planning that goes into a movie. Directing sounds like an intense yet exciting job.
