I had so much fun in the recording booth at Disney! I was able to play the part of Fru Fru that day! I am so excited to share this video with all of you! Did I sound like her, how did I do? I am dying to know your reactions!
I felt so special being in the recording booth doing what actors and actresses do all when they are voice acting! I WOULD love to do voice acting one day! So hey, if anyone out here is reading this, and you need a high pitch mom voice with zero acting experience…that is me!
My series of Zootopia posts during my recent press trip to LA is coming to a close. It doesn’t mean, I won’t stop talking about this movie! After all, I am working on a Zootopia Unit for teachers! I also have my fingers crossed for Zootopia 2! There is so much going on in the city of Zootopia I want to learn about!

Interview with Paul McGrath
While recording, I learned quite a bit about how voice acting works! I actually learned quite a bit overall when interviewing Paul McGrath from Disney! Sometimes directors have actors and actresses in mind. Other times, they call in studio folks and others to do scratch voices while story boarding.
When recording, they actually had me try to do the part several times. I could stay in there all day if they would let me! I am not embarrassed about stuff like this. They allowed me to watch the screen while I was recording.
Then the tech used ADR (Automatic Dialog Replacement) this is when there is a red bar that will go across the screen indicating when it was time to read the line. Besides ADR, they also use SOME modification on some voices. Fru Fru had a high pitch filter added to her voice. Flash, on the other had did not (you can see this during my Flash Interview).
I found out that a main character will have to record for a few hours about 20-30 times over a two year time period. A smaller role might only come into the studio to record about five times.
When actors and actresses start doing the voices, they usually have a character sketch they can look at while doing them. Most actors and actresses are on their own in the recording booth and only periodically might record with another actor.
I learned that Judy’s parents, Don and Bonnie, did all their recording together. I also found out that some actors and actresses will record over the phone using ISDN (a fiber phone). Also, some might be on tour or filming another movie…so they might have to find a studio in the city they are working to record.
Luckily, whether they are recording over the phone, on location or off location technology allows for the transfer of voice files to happen quickly. They no longer have to wait for the mail carrier to bring the tapes to the studio. Instead they can instantly transfer them to each other!
Overall, the experience was amazing! I would love to do this for longer one day!

I’ve not seen it, so I don’t know if the recording sounded like her, but it sure looks like it was a lot of fun! I’d like to try that some day.
